I can't even imagine what will happen when Portnoy starts having kidney stones and hip replacements

Well I think we're still a few decades away from that. I'd worry more about JR.
Eh, not the kidney stone part. My 18 year old brother just had one. But, yeah, JR is definately the risk factor

The age gap may catch up to them, but I honestly can't see anyone else joining them. They will only keep going with Mike. That's my opinion anyway.

Yea, despite how young portnoy acts, the age thing will make itself known.

As old dudes go, JR seems like he's in good shape. He might be the first to go down, but he's still got a ways to go.

I've actually thought that the next album could indeed be a self titled.

That'd be a cool idea on a lot of levels - like going "Right, Mike's gone, but we're still Dream Theater." But for some reason I think it's a little bit odd for a band to be releasing a self-titled album so far into their career. Plus, I'm not sure if it'd be hammering the point home a little too earnestly. "We're Dream Theater! Honestly!"

I quite like the excitement of hearing an album title, anyway. They could play with their band name to an extent. "Circus of Nightmares" or something, just so the implication's there. I think it's probably a bit too late in the day for a self-title to sound particularly natural, though.

A lot of bands do that after a major lineup change.  Reaffirming that it's still the same band, or stating that they're reinventing the band now.  Or maybe a little of each.

They should call the next album Nightmare Cinema so the A7X fans can say that Dream Theater copied their album title. It'll be fun.

I like the angle that it is a reaffirmation that the band is still alive, and that not even something this big could stop it, as the band is now bigger then the contributions of any single member. It transcends the musicians and is kept alive by us, the fans.
Obviously Mike would see it as a big slap in the face, but honestly, I think it's the genius the more it sits with me.
I think we should garner some mutual board support and let the powers that be know where we are at.
Who knows. Fans have a larger impact on the output of an artist today more then ever before (thanks internet).

 :rollin

and what, have the band on the cover, in black & white, looking tough? (except for JR, sorry)

i think a lot of fans would just go "really? cmon" if it was self titled.

it should be called "Dream Theater - Goes to the Rodeo" or "Dream Theater Goes to Prison" or something like that (goes to, does this/that, etc... haha)

I've thought about a self-titled album too. But I think that if the album was self-titled, it should represent DT's music well. Stratovarius' self-titled album was quite different compared to their other releases so it's quite strange that they named it after the band. DT's self-titled album should have all the elements of their music; heavy, mellow, epic, simple. Just like SFAM and 6DOIT!

I think it's a little bit odd for a band to be releasing a self-titled album so far into their career.

Spock's Beard's ninth album is self-titled, for one example.

The Beatles self titled album was nearly their last.

True.  The album is called "The White Album" but that's a description, not the title.  The title of the album is The Beatles.

Fleetwood Mac's first album was self-titled, then their ninth album was self-titled as well, when they re-invented themselves in the 70's with Buckingham and Nicks (a lot of people actually think it is their first album).  Before that, they were more of a blues band that started in the 60's.

Chicago's first and second albums were both technically self-titled.  The band was originally The Chicago Transit Authority, and that was the name of their first album.  Then the real CTA threatened to sue (because it's so easy to confuse a rock band with a bus company) so they shortened the band name to Chicago, which is what they named their second album.

Stone Temple Pilots' latest album, their sixth, is self-titled.  This may have been a "statement" in that the band had broken up for like eight or nine years and was back.  Also, their sound has changed a lot, but it's the same four guys, so maybe it was also something of a reassurance that's it's still them.

Peter Gabriel's first four albums are all self-titled.  They are all Peter Gabriel.  He said that the idea was to make them like issues of a magazine.  Name in the corner, same font, just different pictures.  They had to name the fourth one Security in the U.S. because Americans are so easily confused.

The album commonly referred to as "Led Zeppelin IV" has no title, or if it does, the title is the four glyphs.  There is no writing anywhere on the outside cover, including the spine.  The label on the record itself was the standard Atlantic orange and green, with Led Zeppelin and then the four glyphs where the name of the album goes.

And so on.

All I could think that entire time was that if Chris Farley knew how to play the drums, that's what he'd look like playing them.

The Beatles self titled album was nearly their last.
Oh yeah! And there's Metallica's Black Album, of course. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. It's just that I personally tend to find it a wee bit contrived. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more late STs than debuts. I'm a stickler for trivia, so I tend to find the title very conspicuous by absence.

Spock's Beard, for one, strikes me as a fairly strangely-timed self-title. I'm not sure why they did it. There's nothing more inherently Spock's Beard-y, and there are definitely people who'd argue that they've changed a lot, given their lead songwriter's absence. Even if Feel Euphoria were called Spock's Beard, which would be making a really dramatic statement in the absence of NM, it'd strike me as contrived and a little earnest, but when it arrives a couple of albums later it seems to be just "for the sake of it."

It's harder to judge The White Album and The Black Album, as they've got more historical significance. They're almost musical "facts," to me. I can't say I was listening to much metal when Metallica's ST came out.

NOOOOO! I find this to be WAY to cheesy. Besides, I'm sure they could come up with a delicious album name that will lay down the musical and thematic path for the album to follow.
