Just stating a fact that'll hit home.

True that.

If the band keeps going (which I hope they do, even without MP), I'll never look at BC&SL the same again.

I get Best of Times now though. Didn't even see it coming.
Please don't tell me you are making a parallel between the songs lyrical content and MP leaving the band. TBoT is about his father's death.

I was thinking the same thing.

Regardless, this whole thing sucks terribly. It's like I just lost my best friend.

Sure, Dream Theater can continue without Portnoy, but honestly, Dream Theater WAS Portnoy. He did everything for the band. Set up tours, wrote songs, produced albums. Like, with Portnoy gone, DT is just a shadow of their former self.

I just cannot comprehend this is happening. They were by favourite band in the world. I was fortunate enough to meet them during their Systematic Chaos tour, and to see every show of theirs consecutively since 2002. Sure, I am not as old as some of the fans on these boards, but Dream Theater to me, was my breakthrough to who I am now. And Dream Theater, in essence, is with Mike Portnoy.

I wish him the best for his ventures, despite my heart being shattered. But I mean, they were like best friends to me. Even though they didn't know it.

I cried a little while listening to ACOS :sadpanda:
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I chuckl'd.

Also you know what breaks my heart even more? Never seeing them live with MP. Ever. Also he was the leader, the one who got the balls (no pun intended) to get on with the fans and the closest one to us, he was the motherfucker that always was cheering up everyone and jumping around in Jordan's Videos on Youtube, he was the one that made us laugh and the most active member in live shows.

I JUST CANNOT FUCKING ADMIT IT MAN IT'S ALMOST LIKE THE WHOLE BAND ENDED OR SOMEONE OF THE BAND HAD DIED, WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?? ?? ??

I share with everyone's sadness that we may never see the 12 step suite or TBOT live.  I really hope we do get to see them though.  TBOT is my favorite song off BC&SL...

As many others have said  its not the end of the world, One thing I learned through my recovery process is "as one door closes, another opens" this is true in all aspects of life. The band has yet to make an official statement about their future, and Mike has already stated that they plan to continue without him, so I tip my hats to the other members to continue with their dream of what DT means to them. Mike had his run and has decided he was satisfied enough in what he accomplished with the band that it was time to step aside and pursue other avenues of expressing his musical goals/dreams.

To Mike I wish you nothing but the success in your future and I thank you for making Dream Theater what it was. To the other band members I wish you continuing success in keeping the Dream theater dream alive.

Kansas went on without Kerry Livgren, Pink Floyd went on without Roger Waters, Spock's Beard went on without Neal Morse etc etc.... but they were never as good again.

This sucks.

DREAM THEATER
Press Release
To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with
profound sadness -- regret -- we announce that Mike
Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has
decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike's stature in
the band has meant the world to all of us
professionally, musically, and personally over the
years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major
force within this band.

While it is true that Mike is choosing to pursue other
ventures and challenges, we can assure you
that Dream Theater will continue to move forward
with the same intensity -- and in the same musical
tradition -- that you have all helped make so
successful, and which is truly gratifying to us.
Fans and friends: File this episode under "Black
Clouds and Silver Linings."As planned, we begin
recording our newest album in January 2011, and
we'll follow that with a full-on world tour. "The Spirit
Carries On."

All of us in Dream Theater wholeheartedly wish Mike
the best on his musical journey. We have had a long
and meaningful career together. It is our true hope
that he finds all he is looking for, and that he
achieves the happiness he deserves. He will be
missed.

I got this from JLB's site.
God have mercy on a man
Who doubts what he's sure of.
