Hopefully this brings about a new DT album quicker, just so we can begin to judge then.

I can say quite confidently that won't be happening, makes absolutely no sense.

I'll be really interested to hear the rest of the band members comment on this.

Yeah, I can't wait to hear what JP says about this. (It pretty much goes without saying he'll be the figurehead of the band now, even if he doesn't end up being the leader.)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...

I don't want to see them get somebody temporarily for the studio and then go out live with someone else. Find your guy, believe in him and stick to it.
Yep this... or don't tour, that had already been discussed anyway.

NDV.  Too bad he already has two full plates.

I really don't care for Mike right now but if he turns out to be A7X's permanent drummer...wow. I can't even think.

He can pull a reverse Phil Collins.

Yeah, I'm trying to think of who would be a fit, but I'm kinda drawing a blank. It totally depends on what direction they end up going though.

This post will probably be forgotten in an hour, given the amount of expected responses, but here we go.

First, good luck to MP. You have to follow your heart, and if this was the only way you thought you could preserve your friendships in the band, then you did the right thing.

Second, if the band wasn't willing to go on an extended hiatus, then I hope fans understand that time is money. Bands can NOT be off the road for a significant amount of time, even bands like DT. There are mortgages to pay, kids to eventually put through school, etc. So for MP to expect the guys to go on a long hiatus is really ridiculous. DT makes nothing on album sales. They make money on the road, and through merch. Plain and simple. A long time off the road means less and less income.

Third, that said, it is really, really weird to think of DT going on without Mike Portnoy, but it will, and it will be successful. MP is a great drummer. one of the best. But every single great drummer in heavy metal will want to sit on his drum stool for this gig, and since Mike didn't write any of the music of the songs (mostly a John/Jordan role), just lyrics, I really don't think DT is going to miss Mike in regard to the creation of the music.

Life will go on. Had DT lost Petrucci, the band would be fundamentally altered since he is the core music writer in the band (akin to when Queensryche lost DeGarmo). But the loss of MP can be overcome. It will just take people getting used to the idea.

Anyway, here's hoping A7X gave Mike their drum spot permanently, because it will be a well paying gig, which is something MP will need now that the income from DT touring will not be there.

A lot of drummers may replace him technically, that's not such a hard thing to figure out. However, not a lot of drummers can replace a man who spent 25 hours in a day doing things for Dream Theater's well-being.

There aren't many drummers who could live up to Portnoy's skills, and all the fans expectations.

He at least has to do a live recording of the 12 Steps at a "farewell" concert with DT.
