A sad part about this is it's not like this could even mean Transatlantic will become permanent considering Neal Morse could hold that up at will.

I doubt it's going to be the same without Mike. The guy was a MAJOR writing force.

I'd honestly rather they just hang it up and go solo forever. Their solo material is great, and trying to release a DT album without MP is like trying to release a PT album without Steven Wilson.

My only optimistic thought is that if they even can find a replacement drummer...that maybe this means more JM involvement.

Other than that, I'm going to go cry like a bitch and listen to Disappear.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I am in complete shock.  I'm either going to wake up from this horrible dream, or Mike will update in thirty minutes explaining that someone hacked his accounts.

Why am I getting this unsteady feeling MP's becoming A7X's permanent drummer?

It's like this horrible sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.
If he left DT to join Avenged Sevenfold... I don't know... it just doesn't make sense.

I tweeted my sadness at him. I hope he does something more than the odd Transatlantic release/ join A7X  as his talents are wasted in something with such rare/uncreative releases

I don't know why you guys are that upset. Look at it from a pure musical standpoint. DT HAS been stagnant for awhile now. This forces them to change...not to mention Portnoy himself has been on cruise control for years.

Pros:

- no terrible harsh vocals
- JP + MP "team" is broken up, perhaps they get a producer?
- new member in band = new creative juices flowing

This really can't be bad for Dream Theater. It's kind of sad to think he's not in the band, but hey, admit it -- he simply wasn't as good of a drummer as he used to be (or as interesting). This makes me excited for the next DT release.

Really, really shocking.

At the same time, I'm almost more excited now to see both who will replace him (assuming he's correct about the rest of the band continuing on), and to see what direction they'll go in considering how incredibly influential he was in the band. I hate to say it, but I'm almost more excited at the prospect of their next album after hearing this news, as well as the idea of more Transatlantic and such.

Everything you said is completely true, but fuck I'm still so sad about this.

And who gives a shit if he joins A7X full time? It's probably a good fit.

If this is true, I comend the other four for deciding to carry on.  It's gonna be big shoes to fill, but I myself see no reason why they shouldn't carry on, you have four members that have been together for over ten years, so there's no problem.

Hopefully with MP gone, we'll see some fresh sounds with input from all members, it might be a good thing.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

This is exactly what I hopes he does. I don't like A7X nearly as much as I like DT, but if he doesn't have the passion for DT anymore and is enjoying himself in A7X (and doing a damn good job, too), why not stay there? If the fans don't understand, then screw them.

Yeah, actually the more I think of it, it might work well for Dream Theater. But I just can't imagine DT without Portnoy. I mean, he WAS their stage presence.

I'm whit sigz i would like to hear DT whitout MP, but DAMN A7X really A7X?
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

He's saying he hopes the other guys carry on without him? And yet he's putting up statuses like "This is a sad, sad day....I'm afraid I have some bad news....
MP/DT Sept 1985 - Sept 2010"

You're kind of the strong/objetive guy in here...maybe you're right, maybe they will benefit, or maybe they won't. Who knows? The thing is, it's very hard to imagine Dream Theater without one of its core fundations...

I just saw this on facebook,
I thought oh, thats bullshit, someone must have hacked his account.
Then it's on his forum.

Shit man.

Shit.

Although, I'm not as surprised as I thought I might have been.

Also, since he says the rest of band want to carry on, I'm very interested to see what their music sounds like, minus the creative force that MP was, and just how it shakes up the band, also curious will be whether they release it under the name Dream Theater.

Hopefully Labrie and Myung will get some more input now, I think the next DT will be very diverse and fresh, looking foward to it.
