I don't like Witch Hunt or Vital Signs. Moving Pictures would be my favorite Rush album if it was only 5 tracks long.

I used to feel the same way.  I was fine through "The Camera Eye" and then lost interest.  Just recently, though, the last two tracks have started growing on me.  I'm still not that crazy about "Vital Signs" but "Witch Hunt" has gotten better.

God fucking dammit Gadough.

You don't think The Camera Eye would be a great album closer?

I like all of the songs on Moving Pictures, but it is a very front-heavy album for me; The first four tracks are amazing, Camera Eye great, Witch Hunt and Vital Signs are good, but not really on the same level as the first four songs.
Just opinion of course.

I was thinking about this the other day actually. Moving Pictures is awesome until the last two songs. They're both good songs, but not of the same quality as the previous tracks. I prefer Vital Signs to Witch Hunt though.

It's not so much that they're bad songs...they're not. They just don't sound like they belong on the album. They feel tacked on.

I gotta kind of agree with Drew and Zydar. I like Vital Signs a lot, but Witch Hunt is easily the weakest track on the album. Still, I wouldn't want it cut from the album, because it's still Rush, and therefore = good.

I ordered my MP 5.1 blu-ray, and it will be getting here next week. I am excite. :caffeine:

For me, after playing the crap out of the hit songs as a 13 year old I really appreciated Witch Hunt a few years later to the point of my brother(a bass player) and I jammed on it a thousand times in our basement.  There's something about that guitar riff.  I also loved how Alex added the solo at the end on the live versions of this song and the fact he changed the solo up tour to tour.

Vital Signs was a Favorite of my brothers(what bass player doesn't love the bass on that song).  What I loved it the fact that a band like Rush, could add a Reggae to their repertoire.  Only as I got older did I appreciate how Rush added styles of the time to their music.  How many bands do this?

I can't even put into words how much better side two of Moving Pictures is than side one.

There is so much depth and texture in those last three songs that only "Red Barchetta" and "YYZ" even come close.....

I very rarely listen to Moving Pictures anymore, because I've overplayed side 1 so many times, and side 2 is OK but nothing I would go out of my way to listen to on it's own. It's also the first Rush album I heard/bought, so that only adds to me overplaying it.

But like Kings said, once I get the blu ray I will be smile in my pants and my appreciation for the album will be renewed.

I prefer side two to side one, but it's certainly not a blowout. Though overplayed Tom Sawyer is a good song and the remaining three are all amazing songs, it's just that The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, and Vital Signs, though not nearly as accessible are all better than the rest, save perhaps Limelight.

Controversial opinion time:

I don't like Limelight. And I don't think I ever did. And it's not because it's popular or played a lot, I just legitimately dislike it. The solo is ok, but I don't think it's as great as people make it out to be, Lifeson surely has better ones (Cygnus X-1, La Villa, etc etc)

Yeah, though I used to love Limelight, I now find it to be the weakest on the album by quite a bit.

So I listened to Moving Pictures again today, and I thought about the deal with "Witch Hunt" and "Vital Signs".  From the comments here, I know I'm not alone in feeling something of a drop off after "The Camera Eye".  Not a huge one, but others have noted it.

What if Side Two had started with "Witch Hunt", then "Vital Signs", and closed with "The Camera Eye"?  The very nature of the LP as a medium meant that there would be a break after "Limelight", and honestly, I wouldn't change Side One at all.  But what if things built back up again with "Witch Hunt" and the album closed with the mini-epic of the album?  Somehow I think that that would've tied things together better.  Very few albums are 100% solid end to end, so if you have weaker tracks, if only by a little, isn't it best to "hide" them in the middle?  Start strong and finish strong, and spread things out in between and all that?

I don't like the tone of the riff in Limelight but I love everything else in the song. Especially the lyrics.

Zy, the crowd interaction in the dvd is incredible.  Plus the extra's are great.  Behind the scene of the taping of that show.

I feel the need to jump to the defense of Witch Hunt and Vital Signs, two songs that I love on an album that has no bad songs.  In fact....fuck it, I'll say it: if I had to pick a least favorite track on MP it would be "The Camera Eye."  Great song like every song on MP (and pretty much every Rush song for that matter), I've just never seen what the big deal about it is.  I love Witch Hunt, my favorite of the "Fear" series, and I've loved Vital Signs since the first time I heard it back when I was in junior high.  I love it so much that when I saw them on the Vapor Trails tour I was in line for a beer when I heard them launch into it and I decided to abandon my place in line and run back to my seat so as not to miss a second more than I already had.  And I was almost to the cashier and mighty thirsty too!

Eh, it's tough being the least best or second least best song on an all-time great album full of nothing but great tunes.  Put "Witch Hunt" and "Vital Signs' on any album they have done since, and both would be a lot more revered that they already are.
