For the first time, I am truly disgusted with the Rush fan in general. Not you guys, the people are the Rush boards. I am tired of defending these elitist snobs!
One guy starts a thread about how much he hates DT based on the first thing he finally heard from them. Are you ready... A fucking youtube clip of them playing a Rush cover! He then goes on to say he now understands why people don't like them, cause it sucked so bad! He hated the singer, blah blah, blah.
I personally don't like James singing Rush either but what a fool this dude is.

This jackass has never heard one single Dream Theater song yet he now knows why they suck! What a complete dick! I can't take it.

Ok, I need to take a deep breath. >:(

was this recent? because I swear I saw a thread like that on therushforum like, 8 months ago. unless this is a normal occurrence with TRF...

Yeah, I remember someone bringing up that there were angry Rush fans who hated DT based solely on that cover of The Camera Eye.  Whether they were TRF users or youtube comments I can't remember.

@Tick: You understand why I didn't stay long at TRF?

I never like JLB's voice on Rush covers, but that is still a dumb reason to dismiss the band so quickly.  Sadly, that kind of attitude is indicative of the average fan at an online Rush forum, which is why I rarely go to or post at either of them.

I do understand. I met a lot of mature cool people there 3 or 4 years ago, that are close personal friends of mine today. I love them.
but these days the current crop of posters(not all) leaves me scratching my head.

As someone pointed out over there, it's strange, and in some cases outright hilarious, how some Rush fans are basically lobbing the same criticisms at DT that the music press has been lobbing at Rush throughout their career.

Rush are one of the few Prog bands I like and I've been a big fan since the first time I heard them. I was making out with my first girlfriend at a mate's house and side two of FTK was on the turntable. Not your usual "make out" music I grant you but my love affair with Rush lasted a hell of a lot longer than with the girl.  ;)
Saying that, I haven't liked an album since Counterparts, and haven't liked many songs. they sound too samey to me and lack structure to the melodies. they sound to me like Geddy has come up with the vocal melodies whilst reading through the lyrics for the first time. I know they always wrote the music first and fit the lyrics around it, but in the last few albums (over twenty years) it actually sounds like it.
I know I'm in the minority here.
2112, FTK, PWaves, MP, GuP, PW, HYF, RTB, C, all classics.
The first side of Hemispheres does nothing for me. Again I'm in a minority.

If you did not find some musical goodness in Snakes and Arrows or the two new singles you might be incapable of love.

Honestly, Hemispheres is a great song, but the first side, to me, is easily the most overrated song in the Rush discography.  Its great, but I don't think its worthy of all the OMGSOPROGSOGOOD fawning it gets.  Disliking it outright is very, VERY odd, but I can see where he's coming from.

Its not OMGSOPROGSOGOOD for that reason. Its an amazing song simply because I dare say, has one of Geddy's best vocal performances ever. The intro riff is addicting as hell, the synth section is orgasmic, and the song has an epic ending. What's not to love?

I think Hemispheres is one of my least favorite epics.

SS, you just mentioned that musical virtuosity, multiple sections, and an "epic ending" were not reasons for OMGSOPROGSOGOOD fawning (which I really just said as a joke to begin with).  Do you not listen to prog? :neverusethis:

And I actually don't think Geddy's voice is anything to write home about with that song.  There are lots of older songs that have better performances.  The music is great, though, just not THAT great.

I mean its not the fact that its prog that I love it. Its just it sounds so good!

That being said, there are plenty of songs that aren't prog that have epic endings.

I'm just a sucker for the ending of Hemispheres though, Geddy's voice over the acoustic guitar = orgasm  :heart

It took a while for me to warm up to "Hemispheres" when I first got the Hemispheres CD back in the summer of '92.  It being Part II of "Cygnus X-1," I think I was thrown by it not being as heavy or intense as Part I, at least on the surface or superficially at first.

I still haven't found a decent Rush forum I'd like to hang at.  I'd love to one day but I haven't really been looking all that hard of the years.

There was a time 25 years ago when Hemispheres might have been my favorite Rush album, but after some context I've found that is no longer the case. I still love it, but it has quite a bit of competition.

After 27 years I doubt it. I love side 2, i was just hoping for more after cygnus... and the story does absolutely nothing for me either. going through the black hole and becoming a god in Olympur? Err, no.

Counterparts is a really good record, a lot better than people give it credit for. Double Agent and Cold Fire are great songs.

Counterparts is fantastic.  IMO though, Double Agent brings it down a bit.  Everyday Glory is a really underrated song.

Chalk up another fan of Counterparts here. The last Rush album I really liked. Double Agent is a favourite. Cold Fire is excellent. StickIt Out isn't great once you get over the fact Rush were rocking out again.
And then came TFE and the slide began for me. I know alot of Rush fans rate it but I just never did.

Counterparts seem like a great record. I mainly listen to Animate, Cold Fire, Everyday Glory, and one of their best instrumentals in Leave That Thing Alone.

The biggest weakness of Counterparts is its inconsistency. There are songs that are simply amazing (Cut To The Chase, Cold Fire, Animate), but I just don't care for some other songs (Stick It Out, The Speed Of Love). Apart from that, it's a very good album.

Stick it Out is good but The Speed Of Love is the only debbie downer in the CD.  I'd love to see Cut To the Chase and Alien Shore live.

Nobody's Hero is pretty good
