Meh.  I am disappointed.  THIS is what we've been waiting for?
Where are the keyboards/synths that people were talking about?

The rest of the album better be much better.

This song is pretty great. Based on this, Caravan, and BU2B, I'm pretty damn psyched for the new album.

Listened to about half the song. It's alright. Just seems like more solid Rush.

Any listen might help to prove
A shadow of their youth
This song reveals the awful truth
They're now long in the tooth

No melody, just noise.  I couldn't be more disappointed.  :-\

The song is very cool  :tup, but the stream sounds terrible.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Seems to me to be a silly reason not to like a song. :)

This song seriously rocks, man. I'm pumped for this album. The bass is INSANE.

If the rest of the songs stand up to the level of quality set by Caravan, BU2B, and now Headlong Flight, I could see this being my favorite Rush album ever.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Someone play this for Myung. This is how a bass is meant to sound! I'm liking this more than any Rush since Counterparts. That's not saying alot, but I'm impressed. A bit heavier than I want to hear Rush and it's still got that downtuned sound I don't like, but not bad at all.

Well for Rush, the first song is always a rocker that's not the best song or songs on the album.  It's their track record.  But I do like the song a lot.  Need to hear it at home on real speakers though.

It would be a silly reason indeed.  Too bad there are 4-5 bigger reasons for disappointment here.

Well, what are they? The first thing you apparently had to say about the song was that it's missing keyboards, which we both agree would be a silly reason not to like a song. You also mentioned that there is "no melody", which is just untrue (there is not only melody throughout, but a perfectly fine harmony in the bridge section). So why are you disappointed?

The new song is awesome. Vocals are surprisingly good. Sweet riffing, and DAT BASS.

So excited for the new album.

Gosh - where do i begin?

No vocal melody
No hook
wall of guitars that show no nuance or refinement - Alex is much better than this
Forgettable verses
Loud - back in junior high, kids used to play loud and fast to cover up the fact that they had no chops.  This sounds like they are playing loud and fast to cover up the fact that they are old, or to cover up that they have forgotten how to write songs.

And i don't buy the "leave them alone - they are 60yrs old!" argument.  Each of them has repeatedly said they are currently playing at their peak.

Look - if it sounds like i am picking on them too much, it is because i am so disappointed.  Rush is my favorite band of all time by a factor of 100X.  I have to compare this to their existing catalog, which in my opinion is the greatest canon of music of the past 50yrs.  And in that context, this "song" does not measure up.  I don't think it even registers.

I probably won't listen to this track much. Just comparing the track to the sample the sound quality on the full song is horrid. Rather not have my opinions on the track hindered by horrible sound.

No vocal melody
Dude, there is a vocal melody. It's pretty huge, actually, and really good. Sorta hard to miss.

wall of guitars that show no nuance or refinement - Alex is much better than this

There are riffs that are very clear. And a pretty nifty solo there.

This, and also:

You could interpret it that way. The way I interpret it is that they're a rock band playing a rock single. If your logic holds, Metallica and Maiden have been trying to convince people that they're young and good at songwriting since '82.

I do agree about the bass.  Geddy is playing

I'm done bitching.  I said what i needed to say.  Hopefully the song gets better with each listen (Most Rush does, thank goodness).

Okay, but no one actually believes that.  And most musicians always think they are at their peak, regardless of age.  What are they gonna say?  "Well, we can't play like we used to, but we can still play good enough, so please buy our record?" :lol

I think this will sound a lot better once we hear it in HQ.  It sounds too muddy now, but you can tell it will sound much better when we hear the regular version.
