I didn't "choose" anything.  One does not simply "choose" something like this.  We're talking about The Necromancer here my friend.  The.  Necromancer.  If anything it "chose" me.  Much to learn, you still have.

Caress of Steel is really good, especially Bastille day and The Fountain of Lamenth.

Man, Vapor trails is a great album that sounds terrible, but I'm kinda starting to dig the sound. I desperately wanted a remastered or remixed version, but I don't anymore.  :metal

It's almost as if the poor mastering was done on PURPOSE.... nah, not really.

There needs to be a remaster, though. BADLY.

Did you guys here the 2 remastered songs on the Retrospective III CD?

It was One Little Vicory and Earthshine.  I hiope they do because it was a bit better.

I didn't like Earthshine as much, quite honestly.  Granted, that is one of the songs on VT that I think sounds just fine, and the remaster took some of the bite away from the song.  One Little Victory isn't a good enough song for me to care about it sounding better.

I do have that compilation, and I think those versions of Earthshine and One little victory sounded pretty good. But this ugly sound on Vapor trails is growing on me - the moment guitar kicked in in One little victory when I played it a little while, I started wondering why I used to dislike the sound. It has some sort of bite, as Kev said.

I'd love to hear a slightly-cleaned up Ceiling Unlimited.  I like that song quite a bit, but almost never listen to it because the sound in that particular song is so bad at times.

On the flip side, there is nothing they can do to fix the verses of something like The Stars Look Down. Those verses are downright ugly (weird melody plus that same annoying vocal effect they used in One Little Victory) and fixing the sound won't change that.

Get your pre orders in for the novel.

https://www.rushisaband.com/blog/2012/03/19/3034/Clockwork-Angels-novelization-by-Kevin-J.-Anderson-and-Neil-Peart-now-available-for-pre-order

I don't need to pre-order this.  I'll either buy it on tour or see if there will be auotgraphed editions down the line.

As far as Earthshine and One Little Victory on Retrospective III go, I prefer Earthshine, but not One Little Victory.

There are also slightly different mixes of a handful of songs on the Vapor Trails Profiled CD.  Not as much punch though...

So I'm listening to 2112 now. And it's not bad. It's solid. I could honestly say this stands at the top of anything in the hard rock genre. But I've never liked plain old hard rock, so...
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

I'd say there's enough going on in that album to classify it as more than mere hard rock.

This is impossible.  It's like picking your favorite children out of 100 kids.

20yrs ago it was Limelight
19yrs ago it was Natural Science
18yrs ago it was Red Barchetta
17yrs ago it was La Villa
16yrs ago it was Subdivisions
15yrs ago it was Dreamline
....
8yrs ago it was Afterimage
7yrs ago it was Available Light
6yrs ago it was Witch Hunt
5yrs ago it was Mission
Today it's Losing It

Easier to do my bottom 5 than top 5:

1.  Stick it Out
2.  One Little Victory
3.  Out of the Cradle
4.  We Hold On
5.  Neurotica

Xanadu
2112
Leave That Thing Alone
Marathon
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Can someone explain the hate for "Stick it Out" to me?  I never quite understood why everyone seems to hate that song.  I like it.

It's probably in my bottom 5 as well, if not definitely bottom 10. It's got a grungy edge, which is cool, but it seems forced, and the chorus is just god-awful.

People are goofy.  It is neither great not bad, but just a fun hard rock song.  Plus, it was Rush getting back to doing riff rock.

Ever hear the Grace Under Pressure version? Actually if you dig the electronic drums, you probably want to enjoy the whole concert.....

Re: Stick It Out --

Bottom 10 Rush song. It goes too far into the grunge world for my liking although the song could be taken tongue-in-cheek.

I think I like the instrumental break though. Depends on the day I guess.

What is it about Stick it Out that makes it grunge?  Is it just because it's in dropped D?
