GUP Geddy, reunion Alex, and mid-70s (2112?) Neil?

Not sure. Just the results of a less-than-impressive quest to find funny/embarrassing pics of them.

The guy could have gone with an easier song. I mean, to go out and try to sing Tom Sawyer without any music or anything is just plain wrong.

The wife has gone to every show I've gone for Rush since 1992 except for two shows.  SHE'S KILLING MY WALLET!! :lol

But seriously,   she sings and air drums even on the new songs so it's cool that she loves them too.

My girlfriend doesn't take much interest in the music I listen to as it's not generally what she would care about, but Rush is one of the bands she has taken a liking to, so that is nice.

My girlfriend saw them on the Time Machine tour (before I did!!) when they played Quebec City in 2010. I was hoping to go to one of the Toronto shows in 2010 but I had to work. Luckily they did another leg in 2011 and stopped in Hamilton, so I caught that show. She loves Snakes and Arrows and a smattering of songs from their older albums as well. She isn't a huge fan of Ged's early vocals, but she appreciates the musicianship and the songwriting of the band.

On an unrelated note: I decided to compile a "Best of Rush" 5 CD set, stemming from my putting Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres on one CD and Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures on another. My hope is to have one disc from the selftitled through 2112, one from Signals to Presto, and one from Roll the Bones through to Snakes and Arrows.

Anyone have any recommendations for songs? My lists aren't set in stone, but I'm hoping to have 2-4 songs per album (except 2112, where the title track will suffice)

Here's where I am at the moment:

s/t: no idea (but probably Working Man)
Fly: Anthem, Fly By Night, By-Tor, maybe Beneath, Between & Behind
Caress: Bastille Day, Lakeside Park
2112: 2112

Signals: Subdivisions, Analog Kid, The Weapon, New World Man
Grace: Distant Early Warning, Red Sector A, Between the Wheels
Windows: Marathon, Manhattan Project, Territories
Fire: Force Ten, Time Stand Still, Mission
Presto: Show Don't Tell, The Pass

Roll the Bones: Dreamline, Roll the Bones, Ghost of a Chance
Counterparts: Nobody's Hero, not sure about the rest
Test for Echo: Resist, not sure about the rest
Vapor Trails: One Little Victory, not sure about the rest
Snakes: Far Cry, Workin' Them Angels, Larger Bowl,  Main Monkey Business

I'm not super well-versed with their stuff from Grace onward - my main area of expertise is the late 70s/early 80s. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Leave That Thing Alone very much deserves to be on the Counterparts segment.

I'd avoid adding another FBN song and put A Passage to Bangkok on the first CD, but if you are content with just the title song from 2112, okay then. :)

Granted, this is all a matter of personal tastes and which songs you like the best, but from Counterparts, I would include Animate and Leave That Thing Alone for sure.  Everyday Glory, Cold Fire and Double Agent are also favorites of mine, but I recognize that they aren't favorites for everyone, so, again, it is a matter of personal taste.

Test for Echo - maybe Driven and/or Totem.

Vapor Trails - Earthshine and Nocturne or Freeze, or maybe ever Vapor Trail

I think the rest of your choices are pretty solid, as far as picking the more popular songs with some stellar deep cuts like Territories, Between the Wheels, Mission, etc. in there as well.

The main reason I would leave 2112 as-is is because it just comes across as a tremendous way to end a disc. I feel like putting another song on after it would be really anticlimactic, and I wanted to keep the songs in their running order on each album.

Good call on Leave That Thing Alone, too. They tore it up on the Time Machine Tour and I sorta forgot how awesome it was. Animate is a great tune too.

I was debating putting one of the two epics from Caress on there, but I listened to them both today and came away feeling sort of "meh" about them. Lamneth has some awesome sections but I feel like it doesn't work as well as they thought it would - maybe it's too long or just not well enough put together. Plus it and 2112 would make up over half the disc.

Both epics from Caress... have some absolutely killer parts (and The Necromancer is still in my Rush top 25), but both kind of have that feel of songs you only want to hear every once in a while, not all of the time, IMO.

I think putting other songs from 2112 on the disc, but before 2112 the song, that way the epic still ends the CD, would work nicely, but if you are dead set on having the whole thing it the proper running order, then I see not wanting to have a short song or two "tacked on" so to speak at the end of the CD following the 20-minute plus epic.

2112, Anthem, By-Tor, Fly by Night, Bastille Day and Lakeside Park gives you almost 46 minutes, so with room for like five or six more songs, I still think throwing two more on from 2112 is the best move, and then you could still put three from the debut (What You're Doing would be a great way to kick it off), or maybe two from the debut and then BB&B or In the End from FBN.

On a sidenote, this reminds me of when I used to spend downtime in lecture courses in college trying to come up with the best compilation CDs for Rush and other favorite bands. :)  This was before I got a CD player in my car that plays mp3 CDs, which makes it easy now...I just put nearly everything on one CD (or two in the case of Rush who have too many good songs to even fit on one mp3 CD) and go from there. :lol

Regarding the wives/girlfriends and their like/dislike of Rush discussion:

I'm proud to say that my wife considers herself a Rush fan.  She's seen them twice with me.  Her favorite album? Carress of Steel.  Her favorite Rush song?  The Necromancer  :metal  :metal  :metal

She's generally into indie rock, singer/songwriter stuff and that sort of thing, but sometimes she latches on to the most random stuff from my collection.  Another example: she's obsessed with Ziltoid the Omniscient!  I think that stems more from her being a coffee fan than a metal fan though.

Yeeeeeees. Kevin J. Anderson OS writing a book to go along with the new album.

https://news.2112.net/2012/02/kevin-j-anderson-writing-clockwork.html

Quote
After dropping hints for a while, finally the big announcement, a new project unlike any other I've ever done...and something that I consider very cool.

Most of you are aware of my long-standing friendship with Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist from the legendary rock band Rush, as well as how much Rush has influenced my work. My first novel Resurrection, Inc. was closely inspired by the Rush album "Grace Under Pressure," and I can point to dozens of other novels and stories that bear a clear Rush influence.

For more than twenty years, Neil and I have wanted to collaborate on something MAJOR, a way we could tie together our imaginations, and at last that's happening.

I'm writing the novelization of Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels, their first new CD in five years. Imagine if someone had written the novel of The Wall, Tommy, or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when those classic albums were released. For Rush fans, CLOCKWORK ANGELS is that project.

I worked together with Neil to flesh out the epic story told over the course of the music, as well as the artist Hugh Syme whose paintings fill the CD booklet. In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. To whet your appetite, Rush released the first two tracks, "Caravan" and "BU2B"-listen to those songs to get an idea of the story's beginning.

I'm writing the chapters now, incorporating the lyrics into the narrative, and having a fantastic time. More details to come, but for now-to quote a line from Caravan: "I can't stop thinking big."

Sounds like a GREAT idea, and I cannot wait to read it! I figure the album will be out well before the book, so it'll be interesting to read the book with the album having been out for a couple months. When news like THIS drops, I just get even more and MORE excited for the release of Clockwork Angels!!!

-Marc.
