Force Ten is alright.  Hold Your Fire is a very good album though.  Prime Mover, Time Stand Still and Open Secrets  :tup

Well. Thanks for all the advice. I'm currently listening to A Farewell to Kings and Hold your fire. I really like Force Ten, although that doesn't seem to be too popular as none of you listed that particular song.

I love Force Ten, but there are just so many good songs.

I think Hold Your Fire is one of their worst though, along with Vapor Trails and Test For Echo, so don't give up if you don't like it.

Weird thing, there's this Rush forum where Hold Your Fire is considered better than pre 2112 Rush, and also anything they did after Moving Pictures.

I must say, the artwork for CP was rather phallic.

I can tell where this is going...so I'll go first.

1. Hemispheres
2. Permanent Waves
3. Power Windows
4. Moving Pictures
5. Test For Echo
6. Signals
7. A Farewell to Kings
8. Snakes and Arrows
9. Grace Under Pressure
10. Rush
11. Caress Of Steel
12. Fly By Night
13. 2112
14. Presto
15. Counterparts
16. Hold Your Fire
17. Vapor Trails
18. Roll the Bones

If you're wondering why I put 2112 so low, it's because side 1 is brilliant, and side 2 is just so-so...doesn't do much for me.  I think the album as a whole is over-rated.

Hold Your Fire is a great album.  But again, it doesn't sound like the Rush that many people love, so it gets thrown under the bus.  Some of my favorite tracks:  Mission, Lock and Key, Force Ten, Prime Mover.

I never recommend 2112 (or DT's SFAM) because it's so dense that a new listener comes away with the idea that Rush is requires too large an investment if time. Which is a real shame when you consider how many 4-5 minute, catchy, pop songs they have on albums like Presto and Counterparts. Seems better to me to start slow and short and then learn to appreciate the epics - I was certainly ready for some 15-20 minute tunes after hearing Signals and Test for Echo. Almost like, "oh wow, you mean they play even LONGER??!!"

i never listen to 2112.  The ONLY reason i recommended it above is because it is so popular with so many people.  But i never got into it.

There - i've said it.

Test For Echo all the way up at number 5 is much more of a WTF, especially considering you have all of the other albums released in that time span at or near the bottom.  To each their own...;)

I'm always amazed at the raised eyebrows I get for loving that album.   The only thing I ever hear people talk about are the lyrics.   Admittedly, Dog Years and Totem are low points in the album....but the rest of it is absolutely full of some of the best riffs Alex and Geddy have ever written.    All 5 of the first 5 tracks are flawless classics in my book.   Then 6 and 7 are a little lame, and then Virtuality absolute MELTS MY FACE OFF!  Quite possibly one of the most kick ass riffs I've ever heard Alex play.   Even thinking about it sends a chill up my spine.

Test For Echo succeeded in accomplishing that Counterparts "tried too hard" to do.

EDIT: If I had to put these into tiers...I would say that the top 7 are my "untouchable"...near perfect... :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy albums.   S&A through Counterparts are all my "really excellent" B+ efforts.    The bottom three are the ones I hardly ever listen to (save a few tracks that I love)....HYF could almost be in the middle tier...but it was the first Rush album to ever have what I consider to be a "skip track"...and it had a couple of them.  Vapor Trails is unlistenable just for the production alone.   The songs are good, but I just can NOT listen to it.    Also, there are a couple of songs where they mixed Geddy's yodeling to sound like Slim Whitman.  (picture me as an alien from Mars Attacks!).    And then Roll the Bones is just....bad.

I love TFE as well, and I think it is vastly underrated, but I would never put it above Counterparts.  Also, that "Virtuality" riff is one of Alex's best.  I don't really play guitar, but that riff seems like it would be a beast to play.

Rush fans whining about them not making the Hall every year is annoying and embarrassing.

jammingdude, wait, you love Test for Echo, but Totem (which, to me, is easily one of the only memorable tunes on the record) is lame? :eek :eek

Like I said, to each his own.

And while TFE is not one of Peart's best collective efforts from a lyrical standpoint, that really has little to do with my opinion of it.  The sound of the album overall is just very clunky, and the songwriting is very uneven and all over the place.  Almost every song has some good parts, but many of them don't come together to make great songs.  Yes, the riff in Virtuality is awesome, but the rest of the song is merely good.  And no one will ever convince me that Time and Motion is anything other than complete crap.  WORST RUSH CHORUS EVER.

I was never enamored to Time & Motion.  It never clicked with me.  Now Totem is a killer song.  I would love to see them do that live.

Virtuality is great, I love the riff and the chorus is very catchy. Yeah, the lyrics sound incredibly dated, but did any of you guys hate them back when the track came out?

This is a good point.  When T4E was released, i felt similar to jammindude:  "Test For Echo succeeded in accomplishing [w]hat Counterparts "tried too hard" to do."

But for some reason, as the years have gone by, T4E has faded.  I don't know why.  I still love some of the tracks, but i never want to put the CD in.

Test for Echo is good. The only two songs I don't like much are Dog Years and Carve Away the Stone, the latter just being dull.

Here are my weird album rankings:

1. Permanent Waves
2. Presto
3. Grace Under Pressure
4. Hemispheres
5. Roll the Bones
6. Moving Pictures
7. A Farewell to Kings
8. Test for Echo
9. Signals
10. Hold Your Fire
11. Fly by Night
12. Power Windows
13. Snakes and Arrows
14. 2112
15. Counterparts
16. Vapor Trails
17. Caress of Steel
WHOA, NICE GRAPHICS!

Counterparts succeeded in being an amazing heavy alt-rock album.  Test For Echo fell flat on its face trying to be the same kind of thing while shoving in lyrics about technology and tribal thingies.
