Neil's brain operates on a frequency above the rest of us mortals...

There is tic and toc in atomic
Leaders make a deal
The cosmic is largely comic
A con they couldn't conceal

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

Raise the art to resistance
Danger dare to be grand
Pride reduced to humble pie
Diamonds down to sand

Take heart from earth and weather
The brightness of new birth
Take heart from the harvest
Shave the harvest from the earth

Reasoning is partly insane
Image just an eyeless game
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

That song, along with The Pass, have my favorite Rush lyrics. So brilliant/beautiful.

I'm slowly adding to  my Rush collection.  Bought Fly by Night today, so now I have everything (studio albums at least) from FBN to Hold your Fire.   :D

Quick, help me out! To all you who are knowledgeable about Rush's whole catalog (not just the big hits). Give me the top 5 albums and the top 15 songs! I'm just getting into it, and I like it all. Trying to find the songs that are considered the best. Thanks

Permenant Waves
Moving Pictures
Power Windows
Snakes & Arrows
2112

That should cover all the bases as far as the albums goes.

You're probably going to get a different answer from everyone here.  Start with Moving Pictures, and then Permanent Waves.  Most people will agree on those.  Then, if you like the more "raw" and hard rock side of Rush, move backward in time to 2112.  If you like the synthesizers, move forward to Signals.  Then you can fill in the rest as your budget allows.

1. Permanent Waves
2. Signals
3. A Farewell To Kings
4. Moving Pictures
5. Grace Under Pressure

I say Rush Peaked from 77-84.

Still, all of the first 13 albums range from good to fan-fucking-tastic!

From 991 onwards, they ranged from very good (Counterparts and Vapor Trails) to mostly crap (Roll The Bones).

I don't know HOW Shaq can recommend Vapor Trails over Roll the Bones.  That is ridiculous beyond ridiculous.

and i don't know how jammindude can leave out everything but "Prime Mover" between 87-93, and recommend songs from Test For Echo?  The Color of Right - are you serious??

Roll the Bones is tired adult contemporary to me.

Vapor Trails, if not as good as much of early Rush, is still a fun and rocking attempt at Alt-rock, and has some real killers.

OK, i understand that criticism.  But Roll the Bones is Rush's bestselling album since Moving Pictures, and the band (and I) considers it their best songwriting in the past 25yrs.  We all know the production is lacking, but you cannot, CANNOT call it "mostly crap."

And by the way, i mostly agree about them peaking between 77 and 84.

Aside from the first 2 songs and the instrumental, it does nothing for me.  Nothing.

And really, just because something is high selling, that doesn't make it excellent.

I mean, really, think of some of the weak-ass acts that managed to push out 2x Platinum albums around 90-92.

I think Roll the Bones is Rush's second best album behind Moving Pictures.  People have a hard time because it sounds nothing like the Rush they love.  OK - i get it.  But my points stand.

I like Roll the Bones waaaay more than Vapor Trails. Of course VT's production is a mess, but even if that's improved, the album is just bloated and a chore to listen to all at once.

Wow....really have to disagree with the defense of Roll the Bones.   I really enjoyed Presto...but Roll the Bones was TERRIBLE.   I'll do you one better.  I actually LOVE the first three songs, Ghost of a Chance and Where's my Thing.   The other 5 songs make up my top five WORST Rush songs in their catalog.  Yes I'm serious, no I'm not kidding.  Yes...they are all far worse than Rivendell, Dog Years, Virtuality or whatever other commonly hated Rush song you can come up with.  It's that bad.

IMO of course.... :P

As a matter of fact...I can't think of any other Rush songs that I *actively* dislike except those five.

Roll the Bones is a very good record.  I have always liked it more than most seem to.  The well-known songs are all great, and I dig gems like Heresy (one of their most underrated tunes ever) and The Big Wheel.  Plus, when you listen to the record from start to finish, even the average songs like Face Up and You Bet Your Life sound pretty good.  It is a great listen from start to finish, bottom line.

As for great lyric...

They say there are strangers who threaten us
Our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves

Those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge, quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand

Farewell to Kings
Moving Pictures
Counterparts
Signals
Presto

Actually, what I'd REALLY recommend is getting Rush Chronicles or a few Retrospective discs and check out the various Rush "eras" - there are essentially four of them and they are quite different at first listen. In other words, don't listen to 2112 and assume you won't like other stuff because Test for Echo or Hold Your Fire (for example) are much more accessible in some ways. Your affinity for keyboards vs. guitar has a lot to do with how you should first approach Rush as well. If I'd heard Signals or Power Windows first, I would have never listened to anything else by them. Luckily as a metalhead, I discovered Counterparts first and was able to work my way backwards toward the more proggy and keyboard heavy stuff and appreciate their development as I went.

I'll go a different route and give you what I feel is the best album from each of the band's five "periods" (of 4 album-groups)
Pre-Prog: 2112
Prog-Era: Hemispheres
Synth-Era: Power Windows
Post-Synth: Counterparts
Modern: Snakes & Arrows (granted only 2 albums count for this, but S&A slightly edges VT, but I feel CA will slay both)

I say sample each era of Rush and work your way around it, or complete whichever era you like the most.

Ditto.  Something that comes up often, but probably cannot be repeated enough, is that Rush has always been truly progressive in the sense that their music has constantly evolved over time.  They keep trying new things, their sound keeps changing, their very approach to songwriting and recording has even had a few experiments along the way.

Therefore there is no single Rush album to start with, and the idea that someone would ask for five albums to check out is encouraging.  It definitely makes sense to sample each of the different eras, multiple times if necessary.  (In other words, if you can't find something by Rush that you like, you're not trying hard enough!)

I have to agree with the Retrospective/Chronicles route in discovering Rush.  I first bought the two Retrospectives (before the third one was released) and found I really dug the 80s sound.  So I started with Moving Pictures and Signals.  Since then the bands earlier output has grown on me, even though I'm still partial to the 80s sound.
