Wow! He will release 2 albums (instrumental/vocal) this year like he was planning?

I know there's one soon to be announced. The interview is to promote an art exhibit he's doing.

Ressurrecting this necrothread to say that I'll be speaking with Joe this Wednesday! It's only a 15 minute interview, but I'm excited!

Nice mate.

Of Satriani's releases over the last 10 years or so my favorite is actually Unstoppable Momentum. I didn't expect much at the time, but I've always enjoyed it a ton. it felt more of a band/collaborative work, especially with the arrangements. Love what Mike Keneally does on the record.

My favorite track on it is Can't Go Back:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM8LmzKca3k

Between the melodies and Vinnie Colaiuta's drumming, it's a super-cool piece...

The one he did with Glenn Hughes and Chad Smith is cool, although it was a missed opportunity to not have Glenn sing on at least one track. At the time they said they were working on an album which would have vocals, but that hasn't happened so far...

I know some will say this is the same thing he’s done a thousand times but it’s such a nice song.  Whenever he comes out with something new he just reminds me how much better he is at this than any other guitar instrumentalist out there, like head and shoulders above everyone.  It’s just so classy, tasteful and melodic but still some tasty technique as well.

I did love JP’s last solo record too but he’s not really prolific in this regard.

I remember the other year hearing some stuff from Nita Strauss and Gus G and it just sounded so old hat and masterbatory compared to Joe.

Hoping the new album is great, wasn’t such a huge fan of the last one.

I love Joe, but at the same time I'm a big critic of his output. I liked his album with Glenn Hughes and Chad Smith, but the last one I didn't connect with AT ALL. This new one, which I received AFTER the interview with him, has some truly amazing moments, and several curveballs.

Good to know that! I thought the last album worse than the previous 3, although it’s still enjoyable.

I always like Joe, but nothing has ever beaten The Extremist for me.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Underrated.

My personal fav is Crystal Planet.

I've really not followed him at all for the last 3 or 4 albums.

Both are high points in his career for sure. And I too have been following him from a distance, although I reconnected with hi output in the last three albums. What HAppens NExt is good, Shapeshifter not so much, and the new one is great.

All I own from him are Surfing, The Extremist, and Crystal Planet, and I'd agree the later two are pretty great.

I'll definitely make an effort with this new one then.

I was thinking the Glenn Hughes one was his last one.  In that case, I haven’t been crazy on his last two records then.  Last one I loved was Shockwave Supernova.  This new song sounds great though.  Nothing particularly new but just classic Satriani.

I dunno, big fan of Satch's older stuff, but this new track was really unremarkable. Not bad, nice tune, just unremarkable. The last album I really enjoyed was Black Swans, unfortunately everything since then has been kinda mediocre and this new song does not bring me confidence the new album will be any different.

Surfing, Extremist and Crystal Planet are where it's at. Super collosal and Black Swans were great too.

Yeah Black Swans was the last one I liked.  I checked songs here and there afterwards but was unimpressed

The guy's playing is the closest thing to perfection

To me, "Surfing with the alien" is his absolute masterpiece.
My second favourite is "Flying in a blue dream"

Pity there are too many albums on "automatic pilot".

I find the last few pretty interchangeable but I enjoy any Satriani album I put on.

I’ve always liked his vocal songs - I’m strange like that 😁

Big Satriani fan here. From Not of This Earth to Engines of Creation he managed to make incredible albums with a lot of diversity among them. Hard to choose, but I think Flying... is stil my fave. After that, I think he made a lot of good music, but his albums began to sound a bit safe or predictable. I think that Shockwave Supernova and Unstoppable Moment are the best from  this era - the more complex  rhythm work on both albums elevated them.

I agree that Flying In a Blue Dream is probably still my favourite.  I actually really like all of the songs with vocals on that album too. Big Bad Moon is not my favourite but the guitar solos make it.  Songs like I Believe, Ride and Can’t Slow Down though are pretty cool songs in their own right.  I’d like to hear him do some songs with vocals again.

I do get what people are saying about Joe playing it safe on recent records but safe Joe still just sounds good to me, like an old friend, just a totally unique, instantly recognisable sound.  I am hoping this is better than his last two records though.

I don't know, his singing is fucking horrible.  :lol  Flying in a Blue Dream takes a hit because of some of the vocal songs.

I Believe is a great ballad though.  Love the backwards guitar solos.

Joe isn't a great singer, but for some of his songs it works. I really like I Believe, Big Bad Moon and Ride.

Not sure if I wanted a whole record with his vocals though.

I don’t know if it’s still on, but the vocal album he was planning it would be with a proper vocalist - I forgot his name.

I like his voice, but there again I love Ace Frehley vocals - at least the KISS/ Frehley’s Comet days.

Yes, I gave it a listen. It’s a Joe Satriani album ;D

It’s a bit more “out 5here” than the last couple. It needs more plays to digest I think. It’s more s/t than surfing, that’s for sure.
