Should I be seriously worried?
« on: August 26, 2010, 04:03:59 AM »
https://edition.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/08/26/new.york.muslim.stabbed/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn#fbid=VaI6DyrDmYO&wom=false

Serious question guys: should I be worried for my family's safety now? or is it all just a media thing?
A Muslim family we know in Texas are keeping their kids from school because they got some threatening words written on their house and cars, these are people who were born and raised in America, they're terrified, I saw the dad and I can't believe someone in this state of worry -because he's very ill and defenseless- is gonna support and provide comfort to his family.
I called my in-laws and they seem to be doing all right, they're my only family there.
Should I be worried?
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

Wow. That story enrages me. Religious discrimination is as bad as or even worse than racism for me. Despite the fact that he was drunk, I still think he had the hate in his heart.

As for the question, I honestly can't answer, but I think there's nothing wrong with taking precautions.

Ohgod the comments on that article.  Please make the stupid stop, it's hurting my heart.

I agree with AFO, there isn't anything wrong with precaution.  Even though the media is most likely blowing it up to be more than it is, your family's safety is far too important.

There may not be much in the way of precaution you can take, other than putting weapons throughout your house unfortunately. Though as soon as anything comes your way or others, I would inform the police. Sorry to here of your concern. People who threaten others based off Religion need to be put in there place.

I wouldn't worry too much.  Drunken assholes exist everywhere and rarely need any particularly reason to act out.  Plus, you have a couple of advantages where you live.  For one thing, Texans in general are pretty damned polite.  While there are plenty of assholes here, they're just as likely to go nuts because you were only driving 58 in a 55.  And for every one of them, there are 3 nice families that just want to get along and talk about lawn care and child-raising.  Also, you live in one of the most liberal cities in Texas.  I'm not suggesting that nobody will take notice that you're Egyptian because they will.  It's just that most of them will be civilized, ask silly questions like "do y'all really think cows are Gods?", and otherwise be mindful of the Golden Rule.

Now I would certainly exercise some caution, but that's standard advice that anybody should take.  The world isn't safe and there are people who will fuck you from all races.  Just SOP in my opinion.

By the way, your Muslim friends are probably making a pretty big mistake keeping their kids out of school.  They're preventing themselves from blending into a generally decent society.  The single best way to gain allies is to have school dealings.  Meet a bunch of the other parents from the school and become one of the gang.  If somebody fucks with "that Muslim house that keeps to themselves all the time," it won't be particularly cared about.  If somebody fucks with the Sawalhas, "little Hosni is in my son's 2nd grade class," that's a whole different story.  They'd have tons of support from people who see them as decent folk just trying to raise their kids.

Lastly, I suspect most of the vandalism and mischief is perpetrated by youngsters.  Teenagers are stupid and don't think twice about acting like racist fucktards.  Both applied to me when I was a kid.  It's just something you have to grow out of.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Funny how this bit of advice wouldn't really have occurred to me, but is plain-as-day obvious.  Sound reasoning and great advice.  :tup

You're invited.

And back on topic, Metty, I'm sorry you have concerns.  If you've been in PR much, you probably know my feelings about other religious, but taking matters into one's hands and assaulting, threatening, or otherwise being hateful or using intimidation because of someone's race, religious belief, culture, etc. is just wrong on so many levels and makes me sick.  But I think El Barto's take on it is very sound and wise.

Martin Luther King once said, "I have a dream!"
Shortly after that he was killed. The world is getting sicker by the minute, and while you should not live in fear, you should always have your guard up. There is too much hate in this world and all it takes is one fleeting moment and it could all be over.
Its only been a couple of weeks in Connecticut since a madman killed a bunch of people at a Bud beer distributor after being fired. You never know what can happen. It sucks.

Violent crime has always existed. The only difference now is that due to the internet we hear about it more quickly and with more detail. Caution is reasonable in any situation, but there is absolutely no reason to live in fear.

I could not agree more.

(plus, I must pause for a moment to ponder the irony of the fact that a thread about Islam has now somehow turned into a discussion about appreciating pork)

It was the obvious direction that the thread was headed in.  Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't go there sooner.

Seriously though, I would like to hear back from metty on this (not the pork).
