I always thought it was more about the thrill of being on Earth during its last hours.  When nature unleashes its wrath and engulfs us in fire and brimstone and all that.


I'd take that over being in my 70's and dying of cancer alone in a care home.

My guess is it's the "alone" factor.  You're not quite so alone if the rest of the world dies with you simultaneously.

Of course in reality, you still are, but that's what I assume the rationalization is.

I think that most peoples wish of the end of days happeneing in their lifetime pretty much ends when they have a child.
Thinking about my children suffering and dying makes me very sad.
