Janelle Monaé
« on: August 17, 2010, 07:34:10 PM »
Some people around here know her, right? I'll confess, when I 1st saw her name back in the Spring, I wasn't really buying into her music with the way she was being mixed in with the hipster crowd. And her song "Tightrope" just seemed like another pop-diva I didn't need to give 5 minutes of my time to.

But after finally checking out The ArchAndroid a little over a month ago, I've totally come around on her. It's an excellent record. Catchy, creative, eclectic, and really a lot more original or ambitious than I would ever have thought. She does combine genres rather effectively. But the thing is, many people like to pigeon-hole her to be like James Brown, but I would compare her music more with someone like St.Vincent or Apes and Androids.

I can't deny, her new album is kind of a breath of fresh air to an extent. I've been hoping something new would come along this Summer and grab me, and she is definitely among my favorite new artists (to me) this year.

I've never heard of her, but you seem to have a very eclectic and broad taste in music and pretty much everyone you recommend here is great, so I'll check her out in the very near future :tup

Ancient BUMP....

But I just had to say that I picked up this album from the library a few days ago, and I am just *SO* into it.

R&B can be such a great genre when it's "toyed with"...but unfortunately, the audience doesn't really allow for a lot of experimentation.    The last person to TRULY bring something ORIGINAL to the genre was Prince...and that was 30 years ago.     Everyone else just seems to do what's been done before.

Ok....wait....I take that back.  Outkast has done a pretty good job of experimenting and being totally different from their contemporaries.    But I think my point is that MOST people that play in that forum have to stick to a certain formula.

But The ArchAndroid is a beautifully experimental album.    Cannot get enough of it.

The last time I really got into a R&B artist was P.M Dawn...and their last album failed miserably for exactly the reason why I loved it so much....because it didn't follow the formula that the genre demands.

Saw this thread earlier and decided to check the music out. In a word, my reaction was simply this: "Wow." This lady is one of the most creative R&B/Pop artists I've heard quite sometime. If The Electric Lady is at least as good as The ArchAndroid was, you can definitely expect to see Janelle Monae on my Top 10 Albums of the Year this year. If it's even better... at the very least, it'll be in my Top Five, if not higher.

I repeat, "Wow." :hefdaddy

Access to pre-sale tickets for Janelle's upcoming fall tour (where applicable)

Her online store has some Preorders up which at least some of them, Presale Ticket INFO (links to access) is included. At least for me, most shows that get any HYPE, have the ONLINE SCALPERS Bogart all the tickets within 10 MINUTES of them being available on Ticketmaster, and then end up selling them on Stubhub and other sites for dozens more dollars than the Face Value price.

So I've been getting into her music a lot recently. She's definitely one of the best modern pop/R&B singers I've heard. Really looking forward to the new album.

Here's her new single "Primetime" ft. Miguel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5ewB-o5N9A

:omg: This album 'The Electric Lady' is just completely nuts! I only discovered it just yet, unbelievable.

It's like a culmination of everything that's good about just about every style of music, and then some.

I like every track on it, but the track with Prince, played on HIGH volume is just mesmerizing.

This album sounds audiophile-awesome as well!

Anyone else into this record?

All over that already.  :lol

Yes I dig TEL.. why she's not famous as hell is beyond me.

Maybe it's because of the futuristic concept she's got going..

The weirdest thing though: The first 'new' R&B artist I like draws inspiration from Blade Runner, my favorite sci-fi movie of all time.

This just can't be true alright. Her music is like a dream to me. I can play 'Give 'Em What They Love' 10 times in a row and be totally cool with it.

And DAT VERSE in Q.U.E.E.N... and then how it transitions to the title track.. that's soooo proggy for some reason.

You just basically answered why she's not more famous. Her beats aren't the usual same beats, she talks about many different subjects. Basically she's a true R&B artist.

More than that, she's a true musical artist. I absolutely adore her work. If my Top 50 wasn't solely fixated on Metal and Hard Rock, both of her albums would be pretty damn high on that list.

Since I've discovered her I've been delving more into the likes of Stevie Wonder, Prince etc.

A very nice, groovy and uplifting breather away from the usual metallic sounds I'm listening to.
