I am most definitely NOT a golfer (although my brother in law is a golf pro), but thanks to my employer, I am getting to attend the U.S. Open in Pinehurst on Monday, so I just wanted to jump in here to say suck it lol

Sounds awesome Hef....have fun!!

I'm relieved I missed most of the last few groups Final Round live yesterday.
"I have facility enough that I can throw down something, and play it, and play it correctly, and play it in time, but that doesn't make good records.  What makes good records for me, is when you capture a performance or you get some feeling that you get on tape and that you know you can't plan for it" -Kevin Gilbert

I mean, it's no Jean Van de Velde, but that was a clutch choke-job.

So I just checked, and, uh, you are one of the two who haven't sent.

Yeah. That was a career definer. He's up there with Gregg Norman now.

Cool Chris

A video from that 72nd hole at the 1999 Open cropped up on my YT recently. I didn't watch that tournament live but remember it being a big deal. Peter Alliss nailed the commentary. He went from bewildered, to critical (without being an ass), to pleading to the golf gods for him to make that final putt to get in to the playoff. Broadcasters shouldn't root for anyone, but if there was ever a time to break that rule, that was it, and he handled it masterfully.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

I was in Florida at a work conference watching that live back in '99.  I remember thinking that Van de Velde's reaction to sinking that TRIPLE BOGEY putt was comical - he fist pumped like he'd just won the damn thing... not blown what should've been a guaranteed victory.  When he asked for driver at the tee, his caddy should've taken it out of the bag, and snapped it over his leg.

I'm just re-watching the hole... "A six will do".  "He can afford a six ... still take a double-bogey and finish at 5 over." Oh the irony.

The golf gods should've been merciful and given him a snowman.

Cool Chris

Yeah, if you know how it plays out, that innocuous "A six will do" comment hits hard.

Looking at his career, he won 2 European Tour events, and in 14 majors, aside from that 2nd place at the 1999 Open, his best finish was 19th, with 5 missed cuts. Having his name on the Claret Jug changes that resume a bit, eh?

Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Finally got a chance to play last Friday....only the second time this year.....and shot a 91. The round included shooting an 8 on a Par 3, 8 on a par 5, and missing two birdie putts that were under 4'.  :lol   I hit a ton of good shots but giving away 8 strokes on two holes just isn't conducive to scoring well.  :lol
