Like it so far, but I've got to say, the first track; I Am Colossus is quite underwhelming.
Very much agreed. I was poised to be extremely disappointed after that song. Thankfully, it picked up quite a bit.

Still, I must say I don't really get the appeal of Meshuggah that turns them from a super heavy djent band into brilliance. They're one of those bands that I say I like, because I honestly do, but it's way too samey for me to want to listen to on a regular basis. The concert club I frequent likes to play Meshuggah over the speakers between bands, and I think it works pretty well there. But, in terms of listening to it at home, I don't get the urge too very often.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Uhm, can we stop treating djent like it's just a shitty offshoot of Meshuggah?

Two listens in, and I'm really liking it. First song does start off slow, but it picks up after a bit and after that the album is just brutally fucking heavy. I'll agree that Meshuggah is a mood band, where I have to be in precisely the right mood to listen to it, but when that mood hits, I'm going to be bringing this one out a lot. Just crushingly heavy, some great riffs, awesome album.

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

This album in a lot of places reminds me of Vidlhjarta's new album, and Meshuggah was a huge influence on them, but I enjoy the latter more. Perhaps it's because the vocals stay mainly the same the entire album, no higher or lower pitches, no added aggression in sections or anything like that. I love the heaviness, but I feel that even more heaviness could be added through the vocals as well.

Well it's been murdering my computer since I...acquired it...and I'm prepared to say right now it's my favorite Meshuggah album. I don't know if it's their BEST, but unlike other Meshuggah albums where I have to be in the proper mood to listen to it, I keep coming back to it over and over again. Just so crushingly HEAVY.  :metal

the band really took a turn for the simpler and more melodic. i vastly prefer this direction over, say, Nothing, though i also miss the dynamics of Destroy Erase Improve.

this stuff is gonna be caught in my head for weeks

Picked up the special edition of Koloss from my local record store yesterday for $13. The packaging is pretty nice but god damn it I hate lyric booklets that are foldouts poster like things.

Been listening to Koloss constantly since yesterday, not disappointed. obZen is still definitely my favorite, but this comes pretty close. Do Not Look Down has one of their best grooves ever, Demiurge is brutal as hell, and I Am Colossus has this cool doom-metal vibe Meshuggah hasn't really done before, definitely an underrated song.

song rankings time:
1: Do Not Look Down
2: Demiurge
3: I Am Colossus
4: Behind The Sun
5: The Demon's Name Is Surveillance
6: Marrow
7: Break Those Bones
8: Swarm
9: The Hurt That Finds You First

The Last Vigil is good, too.

Fuck it, ranking time.

1. Marrow
2. Do Not Look Down
3. I Am Colossus
4. Demiurge
5. The Demon's Name is Surveillance
6. Swarm
7. Break Those Bones
8. Behind the Sun
9. The Hurt That Finds You First
10. The Last Vigil (I actually really like this as a closer though. It kind of calms the entire experience down)
I felt its length in quite a few places.

The ones that stood out for me so far, the ones that got me looking like 'wow! What's the name of this track', are:

Demiurge
Do Not Look Down
Marrow
I Am Colossus

In that order, those are my to 4 so far, and I love the closer too, just the way it feels like, err, like the reverb of their amplifiers ringing out in the studio.
