Thrash Metal Discussion/ Appreciation
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:38:15 PM »
In this thread we discuss and appreciate thrash music in general.
but also bands (other than Metallica and Megadeth who both have their own threads)

I wanted to start this thread because of my experience at an Anthrax show two days ago.
It was Incredible. It confirmed my love for this genre of metal.

So let we all appreciate....

I only dabble.  Other than Megadeth and Metallica, the only other "thrash" bands I listen to much at all are Testament and Flotsam & Jetsam, both of which have some excellent songs.

Yeah I pretty much only listen to Megadeth and Metallica (mostly Megadeth these days). But have you guys heard of Prototype? Their album Continuum was fantastic.

I'm open for any recommendations.

Don't know them.
Checking it out.

If you want recommendations I'd suggest the other two of the big four: Anthrax and Slayer but also Exodus, Testament and a recent band called Municipal waste

Obviously, I've listened to the other 2 of the "Big Four", and I saw Slayer live, but I wasn't really impressed at all.
I've heard Exodus talked about here a lot, I'll have to check them out along with the other 2 bands you've mentioned.

I love me some good ol' thrash metal. Slayer, Megadeth, Kreator, Exodus, Testament just to name a few.

Annihilator's Kraf Dinner might easily be one of the best thrash songs out there.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I love thrash. My favorite thrash band as of now is Exodus, specifically their current lineup. The last several releases have all been amazing. Seeing'em live again in a few weeks, after a 2 and 1/2 year lull of support slots of theirs that I regrettably passed up or had to miss.

I of course am a fan of all the obvious band (Metallica and Megadeth actually being lesser favorites).
Anthrax was a favorite of mine in high school. Also enjoy Slayer, Testament, Over Kill, Forbidden, Sepultura, Kreator etc. And I also enjoy a lot of the modern thrash revival bands like Warbringer, Havok, Evile, Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste etc.

Saw Exodus last February, and I MIGHT be seeing them in a couple of weeks as well. Toxic Waltz is one of the best thrash songs to witness live. Though I wouldn't say I'm extremely fond of their current vocalist.

Anyone here a fan of Warbringer? They are without a doubt the best modern thrash metal band out there.

Severed Reality kicks some god damn ass.

Yeah, I mentioned Warbringer in my first post. Great band. First saw'em open for Exodus back in February of '08. They annihilated. One of the best openers I've ever seen.

I saw them last year opening for Obituary. They made the show just 10x more awesome. I can't wait to see them again opening up for Nevermore this September.

Fabulous Disaster is my personal favourite, though Bonded by Blood is a thrash classic.

I. Will. Destroy. You.

EDIT: You aren't the only person I've showed Nevermore too who didn't like the vocals. They grow on some people, but sometimes they just don't. If you ask me, Warrel Dane is one of the best in metal. He's fucking fantastic.

WTF?

Warrel is a fantastic vocalist.

As for Exodus albums...Atrocity Exhibition is my suggestion.

Living proof right here. I hated Warrel's vocals for a long time.

Thrash is the best them.

They barely count as thrash imo. More like power metal.

Iced Earth (especially the earlier stuff) is quite thrashy, but I too wouldn't call then definitively a "thrash" band.
I put them and Nevermore and Kamelot into their own "melodic metal" category.

Nevermore? "Melodic metal"? I wouldn't go that far. I just keep them within the progressive (thrash) metal subgenre. It suits them best. Almost everyone wants to come up with a different argument for what genre they fall under.

Basically this. Never, Neverland is an awesome album. I'd stay aware from their more recent work however. From what I heard (from UMH) they are awful. Particularly in the vocals.

Annihilator's recent stuff would be perfectly acceptable if it wasn't for that god-forsaken vocalist. But yes, Never Neverland is the best, followed by Alice in Hell. Criminally underrated thrash right there.
