Yeah the first song I ever played along to was Metropolis Pt 1 I just picked up the guitar and golden notes of awesome just came flowing out.

srs the first song I ever played along to properly was probably Iron Man or something easy by Sabbath.  Its kind of a blur.  The first song I remember nailing and being very happy about was Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden.

I know what you mean, when I first got that solo section down in phantom of the opera perfectly I was a very happy man.

It's really not all that hard. Scarred, however, that shit's ridiculous.

I think the only REALLY difficult part is the super fast 16th note triplet run eh.  The rest of it is relatively easy once you know which notes to play :P

The 16th note triplet part has a reasonably easy pattern. The section right before the final verse/chorus is really hard. Fuck string skipping.

Do you mean the part that they take like a few seconds silence? Or is that the 16th note triplet?

I think he means in the instrumental section, that really fast run JP does up to the 22nd fret or so

but that section after the silence is tricky for me too

I'm the opposite eh, the string skipping part is piss easy for me but getting that triplet run up to speed w/ alternate picking is a bitch.

First song I played on guitar was DragonForce's "Through The Fire And Flames". I was holding my friend's guitar and had a seizure and spastically played random notes while the song was playing and apparently played it better than Herman Li himself.

/pretending I even play guitar

Why not?

I know the only way I'll learn it is practice, and that feels to me like work after a while, and I don't want guitar to feel like work. I learnt the Sweet Child O Mine solo, but all the while I just wanted to do some blues improv instead.

Oh My god?! :O If I can play the song, then it makes me feel closer to it! I can understand it more! Not to mention it gets like heck of alot more memorable when you know how to play it!

Not with DT for me. It doesn't help that the time signature stuff requires you to listen to it a lot just to get that aspect down, which makes me sick of it even more, THEN I have to painstakingly play it about 100 times to nail it, which, again makes me hate it, and you start to see a pattern develop. I love learning most songs, like SRV or Hendrix licks/riffs and John Mayer chordy stuff, but I'd rather do it in 5 minutes by ear than 2 hours sitting in front of my laptop.

The only exception to this for me is learning Tool songs, but there aren't any 'weedly' bits if you get my point, so it's just a case of learning the time signatures and relatively simple left hand stuff.

I'm pretty sure the first DT song I learned to play all the way through (on guitar) was Learning to Live.

EDIT: Although it may have been Space-Dye Vest. But LtL would definitely have been second.
