Shit, I think I'm addicted to this album. There's always a need to play at least one song of the album whenever I'm listening music.

What the hell did you put in the recordings, Matt? :lol

It's musical crack. I just knew it the second I heard it.

Nice! Good to hear. imo, it's all about getting the right balance of tension and release - particularly in the vocal melody... and of course, keeping it simple. At least that's what I *attempted* to do.  ;)

Cheers,

I'm listening to it right now actually. Man, sorry, but the album is totally devoid of anything enjoyable in music.

Nope its all enjoyable. But of course if you don't like pop then it'll suck.

Actually, I showed the album to my friend, showed him a couple of songs, namely, Back On The Ground, I Got You, and then Why, and by the time he heard that song, he was like, "I have to have this album."  :tup

Not sure I'd state it that way, but it's not doing a lot for me either.   It's weird, because it seems like I should enjoy this.  I definitely appreciate the musicianship.  Guitar playing in particular is really good.  Quality guitar tone as well.  Rhythm section is solid.

As a fan of James LaBrie, I don't regret the purchase, but I'll probably just rip a few of the better tracks (read: tracks with little to no growling) to my iPod and put the CD away.

I guess I would prefer that James do material more in line with "Elements of Persuasion" --which is my favorite JLB solo album by a massive margin-- but if this is the music he likes making now, I wish him the best of luck in the future.  Hell, I'll probably still buy his next one, just to support the guy (and to satisfy my completist-freak-mental-illness :P )

I'm loving the new album.  Every once in a while I get an album that has that one song that I have to keep hitting repeat on.  This album has at least 3 of that one song!

My copy just arrived today and I gave it a listen. I absolutely loved it, but I'll have to give it a couple more listens to familiarize myself with it, and then I will try to make more specific comments.

The album continues to really grow on me. At first I only liked a couple of tracks, but every song has something really catchy that I can't stop listening to. Usually I'm not into this kind of metal, but I really like this album.

Seriously. Every time I listen to it I get another song stuck inside my head. SO MUCH MELODY!

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I've only listened to Static Impulse once by now, but it already seems quite a lot more consistent than IR.  However, after the first listen, apart from One More Time and This Is War none of the songs are as mindblowing as Agony, Undertow, I Got You, Say You're Still Mine, Amnesia, I Will Not Break or Why. But as I said, I've only listened to it once, so I expect it to grow on me :metal

You just listed the two songs that have Peter Wildoer doing the verses... Coincidence?

Not really :D

I'm a melodeath fan, so that stuff is always a positive aspect for me.

However, these two songs also have some of the strongest choruses of the album (as far as I can tell).

I hate to say it, but Wildoer's screams are the reason I never got into SI, aside from loving the first two tracks (and I don't like the verses of One More Time, despite loving that amazing chorus to death). I listened to the album a few times at first, and the screams put me right off. They were just overwhelming.

I don't have a problem with his vocals at all on IR though. I think they're integrated much better into the music, and there's more balance to their use.

I'm not a fan of them either, but apart from the two songs where he did the verses, I didn't mind them, because usually, they were either underneath the vocals, or just a couple of lines here and there. I definitely liked them better than MP's "Brothahood!" on AROP and some of the other stuff he did on BC&SL.

Why does JLB always let his drummers do vocals? He should be like, "Bitch, sit back down!"  :lol

I didn't. I've never had a problem with MP's backups, I think they worked well. But I thought the growled verses on SI were far too much, and detracted from the songs, and the album. It's much more than what DT ever had. I haven't even felt like going back and giving another chance to the songs without growls, because I don't enjoy the album experience.
But One More Time is seriously one of my favourite choruses ever though.

I agree with aprilethereal that the screams have improved. As soon as I heard those deep growls on Agony, I was one happy camper. They're used in the exact same context as on One More Time, but I just enjoy them a lot more on IR.
It's seemingly a small difference, but it's made a big difference for me. IR continues to grow on me, and I think it's a really strong album.
