Speaking of the growls, I hated them and first and I absolutely have no idea how in the world did they grow on me. I can't imagine Static impulse without the growls anymore, they really give it that special freshness.

And I like growls, at least good growls.
Don't wanna derail the thread much, but I'm curious - what are your favorite growlers? :)

Well I don't listen to a lot of it, but for growls my favourite bands are Arch Enemy, Scar Symmetry (both old and new guy), and Opeth (although I don't listen to Opeth much).
I like deep growls, rather than shrieks and squeals, and the metalcorey kind of stuff. Whatever you want to call it.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

So now you have three guys writing the music for James' solo album.

I have a feeling the percentage of input James actually has is getting into single digits.

Yeah, this was announced quite a while ago.  I was hoping they would have something for us within the first three months of 2013.

There have always been multiple writers on his albums.  It's mostly JLB and Matt running the show, but there are always other contributors.

I agree with you. I've always kind of got that vibe though because they record it in Sweden so I think he's not very present for the writing for it, he does have input, but it's limited to the clips they send him and he can put his input.

Portnoy hinted that JLB isn't that involved in it. But you can only take that to a certain extent.

He wasn't when he was around, but without Portnoy in the band he's much more involved in the process. Maybe his contributions don't go as far as chord progressions, but he definitely has some structure ideas, melodies and basic notions of the song. He's himself said that if he has a riff in his head or something, he sings it for the musicians for them to make the idea flourish.

No, I'm not talking about in DT, more about his solo material. A fan said that shortly after MP left DT, he brought up JLB's solo material and MP got all irritated and said that JLB is not involved at all in his solo material besides lyrics

Two things:

1) Static Impulse was recorded in Sweden while DT was on tour. It was written before that.

2) We don't have any means to confirm what SystematicThought just said is true, just some words from someone we don't know of something MP supposedly said while he was upset about the whole thing, and, even then, I remember clearly the words were "never seen a person less involved". And from Mike's point of view, sharing writing credits, sharing spotlight with another singer (in JLB's case screamer) and not being there to oversee the recording constitutes lesser involvement just fine. Is this not a reasonable explanation?

I honestly don't know why is it so shocking to people that James writes music.

Holy guacamole. Sorry if I stepped on anybody's toes.  :P

I loved Static Impulse and Elements of Persuasion, I just repeating what someone else had said. I even said that you have to take what MP said with a grain of salt. I don't think it's necessarily true, but more of I hope JLB is involved highly in the solo projects. Obviously he wouldn't put his name on it if he didn't like it or help write it. JLB even said in an interview that October through the New Year would be consumed with writing his solo record and working on that

Right now I can tell there's a world of difference with the quality of the vocal delivery when James himself is at the helm of his melodies and harmonies. The man knows his voice.

1)
:lol and once again, a thread gives birth to quality comedy. :metal We shall name it... Stanley.

Artie would be better because that name is a comedy for itself, it always reminds me of Artie Fufkin from Spinal Tap's record company  :lol
It is known.

2) Listening to Confronting The Devil. It's just as Kashmir-ish as Shores Of Avalon but you could also sing Home over half of it, or at least I think I could. My god, the "it's so unreal" stanza... I love this man.

Yeah, there are cool recordings of EoP stuff but I'm not a big fan of it. Really hoping they'll get the band to tour this time. Really really hoping. There should be a hole in the schedule somewhere.

Yea I really wanted to see them on the EoP tour but they only played New York/New Jersey area and I couldn't afford to travel that far.

If they tour again however, I hope they don't ignore material from the first 2 albums. Although they likely will since it's so different from EoP, Static Impulse and I assume the next album.
