As I said earlier the verses sound like Scar Symmetry. Whoever said they sound like metalcore, no it's melodeath. If it was metalcore their would be no use for a gruntist/growlist.

About the name. Only DT fans are going to be interested in it. Calling it Mullmuzzler means that many DT fans will have no idea who's project it is and ignore it. However, calling it simply James LaBrie, they need not advertise nearly as much.

I wouldn't mind it if Labrie uses growl in DT record. As long as it fits.

After listening to it several times, I can safely say that I like it, but it isn't very memorable. I don't mind the screamed verses nearly as much as the rest of you in this thread seem to. It's a good song, just nothing special.

I really hope they don't write music that necessarily calls for more growls than not.

Because he's not given lyric credits on half the songs on EoP and he can't play an instrument  ???

As I recall James is not given lyric credit to 3 of the songs, that is out of 12 or 13 (if the extra track is counted). So he let a friend and colleague write a few songs, he still wrote enough for an album release, by todays standards.

1.  Where did you get the impression he can't play an instrument?
2.  Even if he can't, how does that somehow equate to not being able to write music?

Also, unrelated to PC's post, why do people keep using the term "growl" in this thread?  I had to go back and listen again to be sure, but there are no growls anywhere in that song.

Purely anecdotal, but I don't play the guitar, and I've written guitar parts before. You don't have to play an instrument to write a part for it.

I agree. I've used Finale (composing program) to write lengthy instrumental prog pieces (as long as 25 minutes) for things other than drum set (which is what I play), which include guitars, bass guitar, keyboards, strings, organ, and an array of other sounds (although I do play some piano/keyboard). If you can write a good melody or pick out a great harmonic progression, that's writing music.

By the way, the reason I claimed Matt wrote the lyrics to this song is because they're more similar in style and subject to the lyrics he wrote on EoP than they are what James wrote on EoP. But James still writes a ton of lyrics. But I honestly doubt he writes the music.

Whether or not he writes it, the music in his solo projects is WAY more suited to his voice than most of the recent DT output, not that I dislike DT's recent output.

I love it how the new JLB's tune turns out to be more controversial than DT's latest releases.
As for me, well, I think the screamings are out of place, maybe they would have been better with JLB's vocals singing the same thing behind. As far as the music goes, it's good, but nothing astounding. Now, it's a short song, maybe suited to be a single, why not? Btw, I absolutely LOVE EOP, so I'll buy this one as well.

Having had some time to digest the new song, my opinions on it now;

I still don't like the harsh vocals, and I doubt that will change. However, I do commend James on trying out different sounds, and while the harsh vocals probably weren't the way to go, the concept of having the contrast in vocal style between the verses and chorus works.

Also, as I said earlier, harsh vocals aside, I like what I heard here.

One thing that seems a little out of place is the first few seconds, which sound like they should be in a different song. It's not even bad, just weird.

There was no screaming on his other albums. I mean new for his music. Now, in this case, new didn't mean better, but I'd rather an artist try new things and have a misstep here and there than become stagnant.

I know what you were saying, but I just don't get how having a guitarist (or drummer or whoever is doing it) growl is a risk.  I mean, growls are really popular in metal music, and even Dream Theater had a few ones.  Bad ones, but ones nonetheless.  It seems more like a compromise, as really this should be LABRIE'S album, not some other blokes...

Growls aren't unanimously popular. They're polarising, and they're not exactly what James LaBrie's known for. Just 'cause Dream Theater incorporate metal influences doesn't mean that their fans are gonna all be sold on melodeath. An artist like JLB dabbling in melodeath is mad.

1.  I've never seen any evidence to suggest the contrary, aside from him playing the keyboard during the intro the Octavarium-- which, by the way, seemed to have its keys taped and color coordinated in a way that would be unnecessary for someone with even the most basic musical knowledge.

2.  I don't know. Maybe James LaBrie is one of those geniuses who can write music out without being able to play an instrument.  I think it's much more likely that he's just very good at "thinking" vocal parts in his head when he hears the material he's supposed to be singing over.

As someone said, while there are certainly popular bands out there doing it, it's a bit of a risk among the types of people most likely to pick up a JLB album. Also, I don't see it as a risk as much as just trying something he hasn't had in his music before.
Also, the only growls DT have ever attempted didn't exactly go over all that well with most fans.

You're not talking about Portnoy's vocals in ANTR are you? Those aren't growls at all.
