I finished the book ("Misquoting Jesus") yesterday, I can only recommend it to everyone. A very interesting and knowledgeable account of the transmission and origin of the gospels.

For a more interesting (but more dense) book, get this one: https://www.amazon.com/Orthodox-Corruption-Scripture-Christological-Controversies/dp/0195102797/ref=sr_1_10?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1280658221&sr=1-10
Bruce Metzger, ftw.

One can never go wrong with Metzger.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I'm reading Misquoting Jesus now, and I really enjoy it for what it is. I don't feel like I'm being coerced with half-baked arguments. Nor do I feel that cashed-in on. I feel like I'm reading the work of a scholar who just wants people to know that the Bible they're reading has been somewhat co-opted.

Yes, but he did that same thing in multiple other books before publishing that one.  That was my only point.  I didn't learn one new thing with Misquoting Jesus that I hadn't already read in a different Ehrman book.

I would also recommend N.T. Wright's Jesus and The Victory of God.  It's the single-most significant book on the New Testament/Jesus that I've ever read, and it well addresses a lot of these same issues.
