New album is okay, which is a step up from previous efforts. Little Piece of Heaven is still by far my favourite song by them, though Save Me is a nice second.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the band (although they definitely have some serious skills).  Nightmare is okay, but there's only a couple songs I bother with.  I've given City of Evil a few listens and I don't care for it.  On the other hand, I think Little Piece of Heaven is a great song!  Would you recommend the rest of that album?

New album is really good, probably their best so far.

How is the album sound-wise?
I really liked the previous album (the self-titled), but don't care much at all for the older stuff.

Same here.  Well, I only sort of liked that album (by that I mean 2 songs, Critical Acclaim and Gunslinger) but I didn't HATE it like I did City of Evil and their earlier works.

Edit:  And of course A Little Piece of Heaven, their best song!  XD

I Won't See You Tonight Part 2 is heavier than God Hates Us. Liars.

In fact, God Saves Us is no where near heavy compared to some songs from the earlier albums. The deep cookie monster growls make them sound slightly heavy, just angry really.

can people explain to me why everyone here hates the self titled? i freakin love it, and it got me back into the band when i lost faith in them after i saw them on the cities of evil tour and they were a little bad live.

Their experimental stuff people perceive as selling out, and so will automatically rate it lower.

Self Titled was my favourite before Nightmare. But i can see Nightmare becoming my favourite. I don't get why people dislike the self titled so much. Sure they were very catchy but very awesome at the same time. Unbound is such a sick song.

That preachy soap box rant BS in Critical Acclaim was enough to turn me off to the entire record.

i agree that the part sucks, but counting a whole album out because of it is a little weak

as ive said before, im a big rev fan, and he shines the most on that album, as he wrote alot of the songs and sang more

I know it's weak, but I can't help it. I guess I should give tracks 2-8 another chance.

I feel exactly the opposite, to be honest. I didn't care for a lot of the writing and performing he did on the self titled. Though, like I've said, that album did eventually grow on me and I grew to accept it. But the Rev's singing still bothers me.

I've been wondering though, who were the primary writers for City of Evil?

*Check CoE booklet*

...It says all songs written by A7X.

Also, for some reason the title track is really, really growing on me!

I really liked the previous album (the self-titled), but don't care much at all for the older stuff.

It sounds a lot like the s/t, but in my opinion it's even better. They get pretty experimental on all or most of the songs, and Portnoy really delivers on the record. The last 4 songs on the album are the greatest run of songs the band has ever done imho. The last song is 10 minutes of :metal and :hat but I think my favorite song as of this posting is "Fiction"

Mike nailed it!!!!!

Love the new album..... on my 5th listen since buying it yesterday. Buried Alive and Save Me are the obvious front runners here.

I'm a big Avenged fan. I don't know where I rank this album compared to the others. I wouldn't dare rank an album after so few listens. But here's how I rank the others.....

1. Avenged Sevenfold
2. Waken The Fallen
3. City Of Evil
4. Sounding The Seventh Trumpet

I get an Unforgiven vibe from the beginning, a Ministry Of Lost Souls vibe from the bridge, and a This Was Your Life (Megadeth) vibe from the ending.

Buried Alive in general sounds like a Metallica song. But that ending part, even in the production, just sounds like The Day that Never Comes.

Man I really don't get the hate for STST. I freakin love that album. Yes it's got none of the subtleties of later albums, and the songwriting isn't as developed, but they were like 17 when they made it and it has that intense energy and anger that gets me pumped up whenever i listen to it. The drums are also awesome on pretty much every track. It's the first Sevenfold album I heard, and it's pretty much what got me into heavy music in general, so some of my appreciation for it is probably nostalgia, but it still kicks my ass when i listen to it

This album rocks from beginning to end. I love it. It's like City of Evil, with more balls and better sounding vocals.
