Your 'hidden gem' song.
« on: July 18, 2010, 06:33:24 PM »
You know, that song you like so much for various reasons that are almost unexplainable. It just strikes a chord with you, but no one else notices the song. I got the idea for this, because I stumbled upon an old favorite of mine. Feels like coming home..

Mine was:

Stephen Simmonds ft. Lisa Nilsson - Tears Never Dry.

It's a freakin' R&B song, not even that well known. It has one crappy vid on youtube, but apart from that it's pretty hard to find, except if you have Spotify. I wish I could post it, but I know that's against the rules.  :)

It was a moderate hit, but after that song he disappeared from commercial radio/MTV. Out of all the crap I got to hear from it (I just let the radio/tv feed me), this song was an eye-opener of sorts. It had a far more serious, deep sound to it than most of the stuff I heard daily. It was like an area of feelings wich I never thought existed.

Listening back to it now, I really appreciate the string arrangement. It starts with a beautiful atmospheric intro, followed by some of the most soulful vocals I have ever heard. Really dramatic and adding to the vibe of the song. I really dig the contrast the bridge provides with the rest of the song, totally 'light' all of a sudden, amidst the darkness.

Just checked last.fm, this song (his most popular one), gets like 29 plays a week. Judging from that, he totally dropped off the radar. Anyone ever heard this tune while it was popular on commercial radio/TV?

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

It's so metal and powerful, and yet people I play the song for think it's meh.

I'm so glad you mentioned them. Sleeping Awake is a song that perfectly fits the description in the OP. I find it mesmerizing, emotional, entrancing, and yet on certain days I question, "Why the FUCK do I like this song so much!?". I really like P.O.D., but only a handful of songs, the rest are either 'meh' or flat out annoy me. Very odd relationship with this band. I digress.

Before reading James' post though, the first song that came to mind was Sketches of Pain by Tears For Fears. I absolutely adore it; yet it has the potential to bring me down and put a lump in my throat (nug) but I find it so beautiful. A very simple song, but pure in its delivery. I've always loved this band, but this is the song that encompasses everything I love about them.

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.

That'd be the other P.O.D. song I'd have to say. I love that song, but it's so weird and in theory I shouldn't like that song as much as I do.

Both very nostalgic songs for me that bring me right back to the moment I heard them.

Since I'm from Sweden I heard it a lot when it was released (mid 90s), and yes I think it's a good song. Haven't heard anything else from him though.

Giant Squid - Throwing a Donner Party at Sea (Physeter Catadon)

Such an awesome song, and one of the few songs where the lyrics enhance the song.

Our ship struck twice by a whale
Now dig in a bail
Before it is too late
With the brine up to our knees
All I can think is how you'll be
The first to be eaten
You will, you will

With the shit this deep you have to leave
All the things behind that you can't eat
Far too many adrift at sea
You are our chosen
Source of
Meat
With the brine up to our knees
All I can think is how you'll be
The first to be eaten
You will, you will

Highland Wedding, from Steve Morse's album High Tension Wires.  Steve was a big influence on JP and though this isn't one of his shreddingest tunes, it's always been one of my favorites.

Maybe I'm wrong but I've never seen much or any special appreciation for PT's Wedding Nails compared to some of their other songs and for me it's probably my absolute favorite song ever (not just PT but overall) it's one of the few songs that I've heard thousand times and it's still almost as fresh and awesome as it was in past and the main theme 1:02 - 1:17 part of the song defines what is absolutely flawless unearthly piece of music for my soul especially beacause of the awesome keyboard chords in background there and of course that terrific guitar... And there is the middle section here which is also something completely mindblowing...

All I can find on YouTube are covers and remakes, all of which pretty much suck compared to the original.

Lots of these, but one of the most piquant examples is Dancing Fantasy's "Fly".  It's kind of a downtempo smooth vocal jazz number.  They were a relatively obscure group, and I don't think it was even a single that smooth jazz stations played, although it's also not too far off from some of the trip-hop of the time like Hooverphonic.  It has a really relaxing, chilled feel, infectious saxophone melodies and soloing, groovy basslines, a cool clean guitar solo, ethereal backing pads and textures, and indelible guest vocals from Sam Leigh-Brown.

Lots of Norwegian and Swedish stuff. We're not that many people up here anyway, and if you dig a little deeper than the mainstream acts you will find lots of really good and relatively unknown songs.

Lyrics are mostly in Norwegian / Swedish though, so I doubt it'll make much sense to post any of it here.

I'll go with K's Choice - Everything for free instead. This Belgian band turned up on my MTV for god knows how many years ago, and I was instantly drawn in. Everything about this song just clicked with me, from guitars to melody to vocals.

I think they're still active, but ... covid.
