Should I get a remastered edition? Or are any of the original editions still in print?

On the subject of setlists, I  was so jealous when I saw the setlist they played on the night after I saw them. Solely because they played Buying New Soul.

In a way, I'm sort of glad though. I can rarely ever listen to that song anyway. It's just so beautiful and I relate so closely to the lyrics that I get very shaken when I listen to it.

Definitely get the re-releases of the first three albums. Why?
1- UTD comes with a bonus disc, the EP Staircase Infinities, which features some GREAT songs.
2- TSMS also comes as a 2-disc set, but with every song released on the previous 2 versions of the album (UK edition and US edition). It contains all the songs released on both versions of the album, as well as an alternate, single track version of the title track.
3- Some of the drum machine tracks that SW did himself back then have been re-recorded by Gavin, so the songs have a more organic feel, like "Synesthesia" and "Dislocated Day".

-Marc.

In UTD's case, Kev will definitely tell you to find the original if you can.  The rerecorded drums don't bother me like they bother him though.  But the remaster has the Staircase Infinities EP, which I think it kind of necessary.

I think early PT has a different vibe to later PT, but ALL of it is good. Even the first album I enjoy (and that one is their worst.)

The Incident was easily one of the better later albums, though, and easily replaced Stupid Dream as my favorite PT album.

I don't really like number rankings, so I'll list them my own way

Timeless Masterpieces

Deadwing
Fear of a Blank Planet
Stupid  Dream
In Absentia

Among the Best Albums Ever Created

The Incident
Signify
Lightbulb Sun

Not as good as their other work, but still great

On the Sunday of Life
Up the Downstair
The Sky Moves Sideways

Fixed that for you.

I'd agree, except I'd bump Lightbulb Sun down and put Up The Downstair (especially the remixed/remastered version) as a masterpiece.

They played "Pure Narcotic," eh?  *drools*

Also, to anyone who has seen them live in the past year, how does Wilson do the vocals in "Bonnie the Cat" live?  I would think that hushed whisper might be a bit tough to do live.  And does he use the vocal effect during those very short choruses?

No vocal effect during verses (it sounds a bit more "powerful" than on the album), the phone-sounding effect during the chorus.

Just because i find OTSOL way more interesting to listen to, it doesn't mean Stupid Dream is a bad album.
The fact that PT's "worst" album (hate calling it that) still beats so many other albums out there, says it all.

Well, everyone has different opinions about stuff, nothing could be considered "right" or "wrong".
Not like it matters how everyone else ranks the albums, it doesn't really affect me anyways.  :P

Lazarus made me tear up today, though admittedly I have have hay-fever.

Not to be off-topic, but I only just clicked that *perhaps* after having watery/sore eyes and bad coughs for the last 3 summers that I might have hay fever  But hey everyone i'm back from Scotland after walking 121km in 5 days (21, 20, 30, 33, 20). I'm covered in midge bites that have all become massive, and have 14 blisters.
</offtopic>

But back to Porcupine Tree, I finally found out what the Shallow chorus lyrics are. I'd wondered for ages what he was saying.

OK, so Zune Pass has all the PT albums (I think). I've been interested in giving this band another honest chance. What's an overall good album that will hook me in the band?

Also, are there any songs that denounce Christian beliefs lyrically. Not trying to be weird about the lyrics, but that's how I am. I don't feel like sorting through their lyrics and trust you guys with recommendations and all that.

Yes, Halo kinda does that.... although I'm sure there might be a more symbolic reason behind it or something.

But check out Lightbulb Sun. THats a good one, as is Deadwing (but that has Halo on it)
EDIT - Actually I'll double check Halo, I never actually looked up the lyrics for it...

In Absentia is the best choice to start. Great album, shows their different sides, and fairly easy to get into.

There's nothing about Christianity directly, but a few about organised religion and also certain religion-related attitudes (e.g. Halo - click on the title).

Yeah, Halo seems to be more about people that abuse religion other than targeting religion itself, so I'd say you're all set for lyrics... unless depressing break up songs is against your religion ofcourse.  :lol

I just read the lyrics, they seem VERY symbolic, and it didn't seem bad to me.

If you can listen to Rush (whose lyrics more than often refer to the Christian God in a negative way) then you can listen to PT

I would say either Stupid Dream or In Absentia would be the best places to start to get into PT.  You can't go wrong with most of their discography though.  (at least from the albums I've listened to, which excludes Up the Downstair, On The Sunday of Life, and Lightbulb Sun).

Stars Die is easily a top 5 PT song for me. Great atmosphere, great lyrics, great sample bit.

I've been dying to hear it, but none of the legal free music services have it EVER, and I'm both too cheap to buy the CD and too goody goody to download it illegally.

That is a great song.  If you like that song you should check out the song Even Less from Stupid Dream, it's along similar lines.
