Nine Inch Nails appreciation thread
« on: July 11, 2010, 11:16:39 AM »
So recently I got some NiN albums, and was shocked to see no thread about them - any other fans out there?

I have the slip, with teeth and ghosts, and with teeth has just clicked, it's brilliant. The live footage from the free fan dvd is amazing too - every song seems to sound better than on studio.

I really like NIN in the right context, I wouldn't say I love them as a whole but they're a great band. Really good for pre night out drinking music, or road trips with friends, or ESPECIALLY for running to.
Every story needs to have an ending, we might as well give up all this pretending and clear the air...

My relationship with NIN is weird. It's wrong, I know, but what has always thrown me off of really checking out NIN music is the already aged "goth" fanbase. I have within the past week decided that I would toss away all ignorance and experience his music without bias.

I remember being in love with the song Every Day is Exactly the Same when I was a sophomore.

I don't really listen to a lot of other albums other than The Downward Spiral, but they (Trent) are (is) a great band (artist).

The Downward Spiral is one of my favorite concept albums. Deals with nihilism.

Love NIN.  I always find myself listening to them whenever I have to program something too. I don't know why. :millahhhh

Also, Trent Reznor is such a great artist and guy. He's outspoken about how crappy the record labels are etc, and hell, he released kinda 2 albums for free, and all that live footage (450GB of it). I can't think of anyone else that does this sort of thing. Well actually Radiohead.

Massive fan here. My contribution to the thread - my collection: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AkgSJ78mag-kdFRtdWJZUE9fSzA5Y1V0ZS0xZVhkckE&hl=en&output=html

faemir, it seems that you're going backwards chronologically in the band's discography. Trust me, it only gets better from here. If you liked With Teeth (its a very so-so studio album imo), do check out Beside You in Time (the live Blu-Ray for the tour of that album). The live band improves quite a lot of WT songs.

I have and like both The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, but they are CDs I rarely listen to.  Good stuff, but just not something I am ever gonna listen to regularly.

I have a friend who's seen them live, and he said their stuff is much better live, though interestingly I read somewhere that Trent is embarrassed by much of his performance on the WT tour as he was unwell for a lot of it.

In terms of albums, I'll keep digesting the studios I have them i'll move backwards certainly, though I'm hearing older songs from the fan dvd already :)

Pretty Hate Machine is fantastic. It was one of the first albums I ever bought when I was 12 or so. To this day it's the only NIN I've heard, but I still like it quite a bit.

What albums should I also listen to?

Correction: that would be the 1999/2000 Fragility tour which is documented for the And All That Could Have Been cd/dvd. He was on cocaine, heroin (overdosed on it on one occasion) and alcohol around that time period.

TR has been sober/clean from the release of WT-onwards which was also evident in the change of his physical appearance and voice.

These four albums are essential for every music collection:

Pretty Hate Machine
Broken
The Downward Spiral
The Fragile

Since then, it's been hit and miss for me. Although I did like some of With Teeth, most of Year Zero and Ghosts, and The Slip was excellent as well (probably his best since The Fragile.)

I'm very impressed with his new project (with his wife.) Forget what it's called, but downloaded the free debut album to my iTunes. It's a very good album.
Live dates

July 15th, 2010 - Blossom Music Center, Cleveland OH, USA
June 25, 2012 - Taft Theater, Cincinnati OH, USA

Necrothread time!

I got The Downward Spiral 5.1 mix (SA-CD, I had fun ripping the .ac3s), and it's brilliant. Excellent use of the channels, though the mix isn't Steven Wilson level, it's almost there in terms of good use of the rear and middle channels.

I highly recommend it to all, it comes with the 2cd remaster which is really easy to get and barely more than the 1cd edition :tup

Some news from www.nin.com.

Trent is done remastering Pretty Hate Machine apparently and it's set to release on 11/22.

I, personally, can't wait. PHM is a great album and my favorite from NIN.

It doesn't have surround mix like the other remasters though :tdwn

I discovered something interesting about NIN that I noticed a few months ago. Early Nine Inch Nails music when it comes to studio albums are just solid while the remixes were, "ok". Now I find the remixes to the recent stuff vastly superior to the studio versions. There is a website out there where Trent makes available not only his remixes for stuff from With Teeth, Year Zero and The Slip but others have submitted remixes as well since he made available some master clips. I never really got into With Teeth before discovering these remixes and now with a customized version of With Teeth I find myself really loving it, same goes with Year Zero and The Slip. I cannot for the life of me get into Ghosts I-IV. Boring, boring, boring. Oh well.
