Free Album Thread (merged)
« on: July 09, 2010, 04:27:36 PM »
Post links to full releases (albums/EPs/demos/live shows) made available for free by the band themselves. If you can, post the name of the artist/band, the name and year of the release, file format, and a brief description. Please, no links to Rapidshare/Megaupload/Mediafire!

Of course free legal downloads are allowed, sounds fine to me (though it should go in General Music Discussion rather than here obviously). However, it is extremely important that only official links will be allowed. If people start posting links to pirated material they'll find themselves banned. If everyone sticks within the rules, then I think it'd be a cool thing to do :tup

Wouldn't it just make sense then to post the bands website or a place where they personally link to one of those file hosts?

Other than that, this thread is a great idea. It's amazing how much promising stuff there is from bands who have yet to achieve any success.

Sure it makes sense. If you post a link to a file hosting site we have no way of knowing whether or not it was pirated. Posting a link to their site saves us the hassle of having to investigate further.

Even so, it's not fair on us mods to have to check every single link in detail. And anyway it definitely makes sense, if a band is using one of those sites to host their music, they'll clearly still be linking to it from their own site or myspace, otherwise what would be the point?

Alright then.

The New Caledonia - Lotus (proggy jazzy rock type stuff)

Sneakyblueberry always posts these guys, and they're awesome:

https://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=72817503&blogId=307293421

maudlin of the Well - Part the Second (prog rock? very restrained, more avant-garde stuff)

Easily one of my favorite bands, and while this album is nothing like their previous stuff it's still amazing:

https://www.maudlinofthewell.net/downloads.html

Shadowcast Sun (post-rock)

It's not amazing stuff, but it's not bad, and all of their albums are free: https://www.shadowcastsun.com/

Meatronic Records: (experimental/noise)

An internet label, everything on here is free for download. Cool stuff if you're into noise music.

https://meatronic.com/artists

How To Destroy Angels - How To Destroy Angels

Sonata introduced me yesterday, very cool stuff. New project from Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), featuring his wife on vocals.

https://www.howtodestroyangels.com/

Kozai Resonace - The Winged Divers (steampunk/victorian/industrial)

Really cool music that sounds like the soundtrack to a Victorian Mystery novel.

are you a Mew fan?

this band Jazzkamikaze's new album "Supersonic Revolutions" I have been really into over the last week. You can stream the whole thing on their website.

1 Bring Back Spring
2 Arch
3 That Way She Drives Me
4 Across the Palisades
5 Mystery Maze
6 Music Is My Heroin
7 Skies for You
8 The Return of Bab El Ehr and the Future Raiders
9 Mournful Stroms Have Passed Tonight
10 Half of Me
11 M.E.C.
12 Acropolis

think Mew with a jazz element..namely soprano sax. The melodies are quite memorable on much of it.

Alex Mauer

I seem to be of an elite few who love Chip Music, that is, music made with old videogame chipsets. Alex Mauer is one of the few who can compose chip music in a tasteful fashion.

Here is his site where you can get a few albums for free. I personally really like "Antarctica".

https://www.headlessbarbie.com/

Casey James and the Staypuft Kid

Very fun synthy music that stays weird. The guy has a sense of humor and knows what whackos like me like to listen to.

Transylvania Radio is an album nothing short of genius, and you must listen to it now.

https://www.caseyjamesbasichis.com/   (downloads > Transylvania Radio)

kARHu

Electronic project with very driven music. It's something you can play in the background, but at any time you can turn your attention to it and find something cool.

here you can download the album Sinfonia for the Blunt Sword

Norrin Radd

Remember that chip music I was telling you about before? Well, here's chip DEATH METAL.

YOU HEARD ME. GROWLS AND EVERYTHING.

Altus

I posted this guy in the ambient thread. Very good ambient stuff. The album I would recommend most would be The Grand Expanse

You can download this and all his other albums for free here.

Nine Inch Nails - Another Version of the Truth: The Gift (2010)

Our 2008 Lights In The Sky tour was an ambitious multimedia production on a scale well beyond anything we'd ever attempted before. Everyone involved was extremely proud of how it came together, and we were devastated when, for a variety of reasons, we were unable to capture it professionally for a theatrical or commercial release. As a "plan B" of sorts, early last year we released a massive 405GB free download of raw HD footage captured at three different shows during the tour. The idea was to get the footage out in the wild and see what our notoriously enterprising fans could do with it. There were no rules. No strings attached. This was a gift, and an experiment, and for the past year we've watched it come to life in more ways than we could have ever imagined. Fans have edited thousands of videos from the footage, assembled their own DVDs and live albums, even held theatrical screenings of their creations. And now, the ambitious and well-organized group known as This One Is On Us have released their massive, highly-anticipated creation, Another Version of the Truth: The Gift. For 12 months, a core team of dozens of fans and a network of thousands spanning the entire globe pooled their efforts to create this professional-quality 1080p High Definition video with 5.1 Surround Sound concert film, and have released it in every format from Blu-Ray and DVD to iPod and YouTube. It combines footage from all three shows and includes DVD menus, bonus footage, multi-language subtitles, a PDF booklet, and more. That something of this scale was produced entirely by fans, on their own time, purely for the sake of giving something back to the community, is absolutely unprecedented. Theatrical screenings are already being organized. This is yet another example of a devoted fanbase and a policy of openness combining to fill in blanks left by old media barriers. The entire NIN camp is absolutely thrilled that treating our fans with respect and nurturing their creativity has led to such an overwhelming outpour of incredible content, and that we now have such a high quality souvenir from our most ambitious tour ever. Or, as Trent simply put it, "Nine Inch Nails fans kick ass."

https://thisoneisonus.org/node/34
(Blu-Ray - 25GB, Dual Layer DVD - 6.5GB, 720p Apple TV - 4.5GB, 720p Playstation 3 - 3.5GB, 1080p MOV file - 9GB, iPod - 1.7GB, + more)

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip (2008)

The Slip is the eighth album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released on July 22, 2008. It was the fourth consecutive Nine Inch Nails release to be produced by frontman Trent Reznor with collaborators Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder. The album was released for free under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-Share Alike license, with the message from Reznor, "this one's on me." The Slip was initially released digitally via the Nine Inch Nails official website without any prior advertisement or promotion. A limited-edition, physical version followed two months later, though this iteration of the album was not free. The Slip was originally intended to be an EP, but eventually grew to be a full-length album. It was recorded, performed, and released in three weeks; Reznor released the album's only single, "Discipline", to radio stations himself, less than 24 hours after it was mastered by Moulder. Critical reception of the album has been generally favorable, and its unorthodox method of release attracted significant media attention. The album peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200.

https://theslip.nin.com
(high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. Also includes a PDF with artwork and credits.)

Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV (2008)

Ghosts I–IV is the seventh studio release by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, released on March 2, 2008. The team behind the project included Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor, studio-collaborators Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, and instrumental contributions from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew, and Brian Viglione. Reznor described the music of Ghosts as "a soundtrack for daydreams", a sentiment echoed by many critics who compared it with the work of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. The songs are unnamed, and are identified only by their track listing and group number. The album is the first independent release from Nine Inch Nails following its announcement that it had severed its ties with Interscope Records. Initially intended to be a five-track EP, the final release consists of four nine-track instrumental EPs, totaling 36 tracks. The album was released under a Creative Commons license (BY-NC-SA), and in a variety of differing packages at various price points, including a US$300 "Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition". Ghosts was initially released digitally on the official Nine Inch Nails website without any prior advertisement or promotion. Via the official Nine Inch Nails YouTube profile, a user-generated "film festival" was announced, where fans were invited to visually interpret the album's music and post their results. Critical reception of the album has been generally favorable, with its unorthodox release attracting positive comments from many critics. Much coverage of Ghosts I–IV has compared it to the digital-download releases of Radiohead's In Rainbows as well as Saul Williams' The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!, the latter Reznor himself produced. The album was nominated for two Grammy Awards, in the categories "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" and "Best Box Set or Limited Edition Package". These nominations represented the first time music released under a Creative Commons license had been nominated for a Grammy Award.

How to Destroy Angels - How to Destroy Angels (2010)

How to Destroy Angels is the debut EP by post-industrial group How to Destroy Angels. The six song EP was released as a free download via the band's website on June 1, 2010, and a retail CD will be available on July 6, 2010. A "Hi-Def Upgrade" was also available, with higher quality audio and the music video for the song "The Space in Between".
