Does anyone know any good ambient artists? I mean tasteful ambient, not that shit you get at bookstores that just sound like the craziest fucking jungle in the whole world where there is a waterfall and a thousand crickets trying to chirp over the hooting of owls and rain hitting a tin roof while some cockmoose plays an annoyingly bright piano louder than the incessant thunder cracks.

Here's one artist I like

Altus

All the albums are free as well. My personal favorite albums are "The Grand Expanse" and "Excursion Two."

Check out Brian Eno's Music for Airports. The first volume is pretty much the 'classic' ambient album.

Does Chroma Key count?
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

In a way...sort of. But even though it's not very busy music, there's still enough going on to really focus on. Chroma Key music really has a lot of room to breathe, but it's not the same as what I would normally define ambient music as.

I guess it's only really ambient compared to most of the other things I listen to. :lol

Not really.

Sigur Ros is one of my favorite bands, don't get me wrong. But even in their quieter songs there is a lot of emotional tension.

Here is my favorite guy, though acquiring his music seems to be a bitch I think I was lucky and happened to be at the right place at the right time. He's worked with a more "electric" guy who goes by the name axxess..and they made a disc called axxess/maxxess....which was cool.

https://www.maxxess.de/cm/index.php?en

I would also consider most of Ozric Tentacles to be Ambient
Synaethisia would be another.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

Thumbs up to the Brian Eno recommendations, especially Music For Airports, which got me into ambient. I'd recommend his song 'Always Returning', both I and II, as they're easily the best ambient tracks I've ever heard.

Brian Eno's Neroli and Thursday Afternoon are really great too.
In some weird way I've always considered Sunn O))) to be ambient too. Very dark, but ambient.

We need some Lustmord (Dark Ambient) love going around in this thread. Check out Heresy, The Place Where the Black Stars Hang and Stalker. Rising is a great introduction too as it serves as a live set using sonic elements from all his releases, so it comes off as a bit of a "greatest hits" if you're not familiar with his work.

I've listened to qu ite a lot of samples on Amazon but a lot seems to be too dance&electronic for personal taste. I've been looking for something more nature inspired but not just sound effects as somebody mentioned earlier in this thread. Any recommendations?

Re-released as Strange Paradise. It gets really haunting around 1:05:50

i back the Bass Communion and Shpongle recommendations 100%  :metal

also, several Ulver albums are completely ambient: Lyckantropen Themes colours it with some classical textures, while Teachings in Silence use some glitch aspects and dronework. both are impeccable pieces of work top to bottom.

Resurrecting this thread because I've been getting more and more into Ambient myself. I've found myself listening to more and more Bon Iver and Sigur Ros and that type of stuff lately, and I've been realizing that it's the quieter, more spaced-out sections of that music I enjoy most. Listened to some Brian Eno recently and loved it.

My problem is, I'm not into dance or house or techno AT ALL, and don't want it ruining my ambience most of the time.

Can anyone recommend some good ambient stuff that's really soundscapey and meditative? Like Space Music, almost? I don't really want anything droning or depressive either.

Even stuff like this is good cheesy as it seems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo3VAltxlr8

I love me some Shpongle but I wouldn't say it's ambient. It has that quality though, so whatever.

My favorites:

Hammock
Steve Roach
Global Communication
Biosphere
Deepchord presents: Echospace

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .
