"Don't Look Past Me" is the best song DT has ever written.

MASTERPIECE

Needs to be played live. To live forever also needs to be brought back, and I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that it is one of my favourite DT songs.

Don't Look Past Me is a very good song, but I have to say that I like To Live Forever more.

The opening chord progression of TLF is so nice, it just flows so well.  I use it all the time in church before services.

LOVE that song. I really wish JP would play riffs like that nowadays (example: the riff under the key solo starting at about 1:00).

I don't agree that it's their best ever, but it is incredibly awesome.  I really wish they would play it live.

So I looked up and listened to what sounded like a demo version of Don't Look Past Me. It was clearly DT, but I didn't hear the amazing opus being described here. I heard what sounded like a good B side to I&W.

I would like to listen to this song touched up so it sounds like if it were to be released (mastered, better produced? I don't know the correct term). It deserves to.

You likely heard the correct song then.

I've only ever heard the version on When Demos and Singles Unite, and I always thought it was pretty good.

"Don't Look Past Me" is amazing.

A while ago I was whining (what's new?) about how DT never seem to write amazing verses for vocals. DLPM is a rare example where all the vocals are smiletastic.

Yup, I swear it feels like JLB is a hired gun, just goes in to sing their melodies. It should be up to the vocalist to come up with the vocal melodies, but I guess it works.

Well, I don't think it does actually work anymore. I'm VERY eager to see if JLB comes up with superior vocal melodies on his upcoming solo album, then we'll know for sure.

It's very Marillion-esque. I like it. Nowhere near their best, though.

This. However the solo is one of Petrucci's best and LaBrķe's vocals are incredible without making him a show-off.

I somewhat disagree with this.  It's perfectly fine for someone to write a song, including the vocal melody - after all, that's what makes the song.  My problem is that James doesn't write enough songs with DT.  It doesn't bother me that JP or Portnoy "tell" him what to sing on THEIR songs, although they should let him have some freedom to interpretate, I think.  The thing that bothers me the most, though, is that he doesn't come up with nearly enough of "his" stuff within DT.

The version on Cleaning out the Closet is awesome.  They should really re-release that CD on Ytsejam, as I think the versions of the songs that were cut from FII sound better on COtC than they do on the FII demos.

While were on the topic. What exactly is the story of Don't Look Past Me and To Live Forever?

I have only been able to get bits here and there on them.

I think they're I&W B-sides but I'm not sure. To Live Forever is on the Greatest Hit compilation, no idea about Don't Look Past Me.

That is correct. I don't have it on me, but the Images And Words Demos 1989-1991 discusses these B-Sides, and how other songs were chosen in their place (I believe it was "Another Day" and "Surrounded") for inclusion on the album.

Also, does anyone know if the version that was released on "Cleaning Out The Closet" is unique to that release, in terms of recording and production (i.e. greater than demo quality, as if it were fully produced and mixed properly, etc. etc.).

They were both pre-I&W compositions.  Don't Look Past Me was demo'd around 1989 or 1990 with vocalist John Hendricks.  To Live Forever was recorded around the same time as the I&W songs.  For whatever reason, neither was included on I&W.  To Live Forever was given an additional verse by Kevin Moore and then recorded again around the same time as Awake, along with Eve, but again, neither of them were included on the album.  Don't Look Past Me was eventually re-recorded with LaBrie, and all of the songs (including both versions of To Live Forever) were included on the DT Fan Club CD Cleaning Out The Closet.

Love the song to bits, and it's probably my 3rd fave Dream Theater song (if we're making lists, which we aren't, so I don't know why I mentioned it...).  Just a really nice, uplifting song, with great melodies, great riffs and an awesome solo.

Isn't it pretty much the only non-BC&SL song besides SDV not to be played live?  Poor old Kev and his songs, always getting looked past...
