Karnivool - Asymmetry (2013) [orig Sound Awake - (2009)]
« on: April 27, 2009, 10:06:07 PM »
Anyone check out the new track on their myspace? "Set Fire to the Hive"..fucking smokes! If the rest of this upcoming album is of that one's quality, this new album of theirs has some top 10 potential for me.

I love these guys, I will listen to the track some time tonight

Now he is dressing this naked floor with his flesh and blood, and time passes by. His trade of pain might just have lead him to deal with consequence for some change as time passes by"

"Karnivool’s new album Sound Awake is confirmed to be released in Australia on June 5 as part of a unique worldwide partnership with Sony Music. The new partnership with Sony Music Australia has allowed the band to maintain their independence in Australia whilst getting the helping hand overseas that any Australian band needs to make waves internationally. Karnivool will build on the inroads already made in the US and UK and other territories with a release through the Sony Independent Network / Red Distribution early in 2010."

Does anyone know where/how to get paid-for downloads of this or their other album? I have an iTunes account and since i have seen a lot of discussion of this band, I wanted to D/L the record. I had to change countries in iTunes main page, then it said my account didn't allow me to get it. I'll definitely give this a listen or hear the samples when it gets released - but as far as acquiring it, I'd like to buy downloads as I don't think I want to shell out international shipping of the actual CD. (I still buy CDs - but i'm new to this band and not that hardcore of a fan to bother with the $$ to get it to the USA)

it's a great way to showcase the drum sound by introducing the album with that awesome drumming and sound.

new album is quite good. I really look forward to hearing it without the compression of these myspace uploads. The crash and splash cymbals have that horrible compression at those high-pitched tones that bugs the hell out of me.

That being said, this is really thick record. It's 72 minutes, the last 2 tracks being 10+ each. I'm not sure if it will go the way of say the new Archive album or perhaps even the new dredg album..or if it's length be it's biggest weakness.

Because on their own, each track is quite good..some even great. I suppose it's not entirely without repeated melodic sense or the tonality and writing approach being kind of similar on some tracks, but overall, I don't know if that'll hurt this as much as it being a bit of a project to get all the way through. I think depth-wise, it definitely surpasses Themata by a decent margin. But how addictive it becomes for me only time will tell.

Can the whole thing be taken-in as a larger concept? That for me, may make a difference..often when a record of this length and scale goes further for me. More people certainly are going to want to hear this, regardless.

Just bought this album, so far it sounds great! I really like the direction they've taken this album. The music is very tool-esque and the song structures are excellent, I appreciate it when bands don't take the safe route and repeat the chorus 3-4 times each song.

Highly recommend this band!

Just saw them for the second night in a row last night. This album comes off really well live. It's not as crowd-wrenching as some of their earlier stuff (The pit went insane for Shutterspeed/Themata/Roquefort) but it still makes for one hell of a show.

Although the album cover itself and the cover booklet are somewhat... Minimalist? There's not a lot on them at all, which is kinda cool, but the degree to which it's done here is almost frustrating. Album art etc makes a big difference for me, which is one of the reasons I still go out and buy CD's, but there's not a lot here for me to look at, which makes it kinda sad.

I really love the new album, as well as the debut. Been listening to them both on Spotify since discovering they were on there, really great stuff!

Yeah the new album is pretty long, so doesn't feel so concise as Themata, but the quality of the music really is top-notch, so I haven't found it dragging yet.

It's nice to hear good vocals over heavy music.  To me my favorite type of heavy has melody in it.  I think that's why I don't like a lot of the scream/growl bands.  And why I like Karnivool.

It's a really great album, glad you guys are getting into them! Ian Kenny's vocals are amazing and he has been flawless live the 3-4 times i've seen them!

Gawd, this album is amazing. Managed to make my top 10 of 2009 in just the last week.

Every song is just so original and unique, this band really has it's own style.

Favorite tracks anyone?

Simple Boy (that bass riff! and I love the parts where the groove is half time)
New Day (great melodies and lyrics)
Set Fire To the Hive (just badass and frantic)
Deadman (pretty epic)
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Best tracks off the new album for me are - Change, set fire to the hive and new day.

Cote and Themata are probably my two favourite tracks by them still.

Fair to Midland just posted some stuff via twitter and myspace about the tour.

Fair to Midland probably are assuming by April they will have the equipment replaced from what they lost in the accident.

Karnivool it appears will be in Europe before SXSW

after all the hype this band got i acquired this album and the 05 release themata. While I enjoy both...and listened to Sound Awake first......Themata just buries it in terms of song structure, balance and all together awesomeness.

That being said.
If this band came within a 100 miles of me, I'd pay to go see them.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

A friend of mine burned a couple of their albums for me to listen to.  I haven't yet, but I'm checkin' out Set Fire to the Hive now.  I definitely like what I'm hearing.
