The DTF Surround Sound Thread
« on: July 02, 2010, 08:17:09 PM »
So, a lot of you have surround sound systems, and I thought it would be a cool idea to have a thread devoted to it... whether it be the systems itself, speaker placements, recommendations, new albums/videos you got for it, etc.

So, maybe we should start off with what systems we have. I just bought mine back in May (mainly for the Porcupine Tree mixes :D). I've got an Onkyo HT-S6200 7.1-Channel speaker/receiver set, and an OPPO BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc Player for blu-ray/DVD-A/SACDs.

I'm gonna get pics of my setup soon... I'm currently working on turning my old bedroom into my entertainment room. :D

So let's see what you guys have!

And let me be the first in this thread to say: Steven Wilson.

:hefdaddy

I've been debating on whether not to get the In The Court of the Crimson King boxset with the 5.1 mix and all the extra goodies. I do like that album, and it is a semi-nostalgic album for me, but I don't know if I like it enough to fork over all the cash for about 7 variations of the same album.  :D But the PT mixes are absolutely amazing... Lightbulb Sun in particular stands out for me.

We should get our surround sound album collections too... this is what I have at the moment
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream (DVD-A)
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun (DVD-A)
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (DVD-A)
Porcupine Tree - The Incident (DVD-A)
Elton John - Madman Across the Water (SACD)
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (SACD)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (SACD)
Rush - Snakes and Arrows (DVD-A)

Plus a bunch of fan mixes I've downloaded. Some of them are really good and sound legit enough to be actual releases.

If I didn't already own the Crimson albums, I'd definitely buy them pretty much because of Steven Wilson's involvement. Now let me get my DVD-A albums together...

Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
Ayreon - Actual Fantasy
Bruce Dickinson - Balls to Picasso
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
No-Man - Together We're Stranger
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet, The Incident
Rush - Snakes and Arrows
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

I'm sure I missed one or two.

My parents bought one back in I think 1998, back when I was 4 or so and I remember the first album that my Dad played  Bachman-Turner Overdrive's Not Fragile, which I remember sounding loud and amazing. That system is still in the basement today

Since than, I have very few releases on Surround, but they all sound great.

Dream Theater-Systematic Chaos (Maybe Mr. Wilson should remix DT's past catalogue :P)
Porcupine Tree- Fear of a Blank Planet-The Incident
King Crimson-2 CD Set In The Court of the Crimson King

I need to upgrade. I have a Sony 5.1 reciever with 150 watt JBL speakers. I own all of the 5.1's from P-Tree + S & A SC from DT Sting 10 Sumners Tales and many DVD concerts that sound bad ass. My Toto 25 year anniversary in Amsterdamn is the best I've ever heard.

I've listened to that SACD version on headphones several times, concentrated listens, and I can safely say it's actually worse than the earlier 1994 remaster on CD. I think that version of The Dark Side is only available in mainstream/popular music stores.

Steven Wilson - Insurgentes
Porcupine Tree - The Incident, Fear of a Blank Planet/Nil Recurring, Deadwing, In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream
Opeth - Watershed, Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park, Still Life
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here

My 5.1 set is a horribly cheap Creative pc only system, but it does the job until I can get a real setup.

How good are the Rush, Ayreon and Paradise Lost ones Nick?

Obligatory I HEYT 5.0 MIXES.

Energy Take 5 (they're smaller than comp speakers) black piano finish, 8 inch Energy powered sub. I've been to alot of show rooms over the years.....I haven't heard many close to their quality for under 5K. I have them powered with a cheap little 5.1 Technics amp...which is pretty clean until about half way but I never have need to  push the limits.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

I have a Yamaha receiver with the stock speakers it came with (5.1) and it sounds great.

As far as 5.1 albums I have:

PT - Lightbulb Sun
Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Opeth - Watershed
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

I think.. I may have a couple more.

I've actually been working on mixing my band's music into 5.1. It is pretty hard, but a lot of fun. However, I'm not sure how to do the .1 channel... anyone have any idea on that?

And I listened to the Dark Side SACD before, but I wasn't paying too close attention. I don't remember the mix being that different, but maybe it was.

The next two surround sound mixes I wanna get are Insurgentes and Systematic Chaos.

I've got a Sony receiver capable of Dolby Digital and DTS, a Sony Subwoofer that will shake the houses directly next to you, three Sony speakers in the front, two big Bose speakers for the surround. It's godly. I want to get more PT 5.1s. All I have is FOABP/NR, but I also have a ton of concert DVDs that sound incredible on it.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

El Cielo is a great SACD.

As for me I just handed down my surround sound system to my little brother, I'm shopping for a new system.
