Anyways, the list started out funny, but when he started just ragging on individual bands/genres (#5-8) it went from a funny article to this guy basically just talking about bands/genres he doesn't like.

Harhar. Okay read; but spot on for most of them. I like how Gorillaz were an exemption of a 'cartoon band'. It is in fact a terrible question that is usually only brought up by those that answer number one anyhow. At least in my experience, but someone hasn't asked me this since high-school (in person).

#1 and #2 are more or less interchangeable. The people who say they listen to all kinds of music or "everything" usually mean that they'll listen to...everything that the radio plays, but nothing outside of that.

This may sound elitist, but I believe that they genuinely think they're correct. So many people are unaware that there is an entire world of music outside of the radio. I know several people that would be shocked to learn of the sheer number of bands and artists that exist outside of the influence of the mainstream. So when they say they listen to everything, they probably think they do just that.

Pretty much this. Also, I usally respond that I don't love everything but I try to be open-minded about music and that my favorites are Unexpect, Porcupine Tree etc. If the listener know these bands: Cool! We can talk about them but if not, no big deal either.

I think a better way to put the "everything" answer is to say "I'll listen to anything" instead of "I listen to everything," therefore amending that you may not commonly listen to Atmospheric Pirate Metal or Celtic Ambient Avant-Garde Pixie Folk, but you would have no problem with listening to it.

Whenever anyone asks me "Marc, what kind of music do you listen to?", I like answering them with "whatever music I happen to be listening to at the time" or "the music that I own, you know, that I physically bought and physically own and physically listen to"...

I do agree with the whole "I listen to everything/anything" answer... I always try to have something crazy in my car to pop in the CD player when anyone says that.

I enjoy it when people say "I'm very open-minded about music and have no qualms listening to things that are new to me". These are the music-lovers you want to have as friends.

That is one of the funniest things I have ever read.  Try and actually make any sense out of the bolded part...

I just say "Rock, prog, and some metal."  When asked about "prog" I just say "bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Muse, and Dream Theater."  Lots of those are terrible answers and are more like lashing out at 15-year olds "music" section on Facebook, but I agree with Sigz that 5-8 just, as PC put it, "satisfying the writer's masturbatory urges."

Well when I first meet someone, I usually say I like Rock. Then see if he likes rock too. If he doesn't, I quit the music conversation there. But if he does, I kinda tells him that I like hard rock, to the extent of metal. So then we talk. But most of the time, the guy doesn't know at least 80% of the bands I listen to. The ones he knows are Pink Floyd and Dream Theater, but that's usually about it.

One time I ran into this guy who liked Nirvana and stuff. I asked him if he listens to metal and he said no. Then I asked again, "what do you think about metal?" Then his answer was something like, "It's a pretentious genre." Although I want to disagree to the fullest, I really had to agree that at least 80% of metal bands out there are really pretentious with almost no music.

Edit: And yes, he liked Nirvana, so his opinion doesn't really count.

I usually just say prog too. Metal occasionally. I don't like a lot of straight heavy metal though
