I hear you on the detail, Chad.  The last time I thought seriously about getting one was when I was still in the military.  A lot of friends had gotten them in Okinawa in '89, but I hadn't come up with anything I really wanted.  Shortly after we got back, I drew up something I was actually interested in.  I don't have it anymore, but it was a variation of the crest on the first House of Lords album, with some more custom details to personalize it and make it relevant to me.

Pic of that album cover for reference:

I was going to have it be a shoulder/upper arm tat.  I took it to an artist, and his eyes bugged out.  He told me he could definitely do it.  But with the level of detail I had, he said it needed to be a LOT bigger, as in a full back tat, or else it needed to be WAY simplified, which would be a shame because the level of detail was pretty beautiful.  So I ended up just scrapping the idea.

Oh, and yours is very cool, Chad!  :tup

I'm not a tat guy, myself, and so have none (not because I'm against them, but because I really can't figure out something that I care about that much to get on my body. Closest so far, some reference to Uconn or the Eye of Horus.   Having said that, in recent years - given the passing of some of the older members of my family - a sort of modern version of the old school, what I call "Navy" tattoo.    My grandfather had several tattoos, but they were all of the sort of thick green line variety, and my uncle, who just passed at 86, had several actual Navy tattoos, including an anchor on his forearm.  (One of them, I forget which one, had a 50's pinup model - think "Betty Boop" - on his forearm as well.   I don't really have a style, per se; I don't look like those hipster rockabilly guys, but I kind of like that idea of a tattoo.

We'll see.  Likely all talk, plus like anything else, there are certain bells you can't unring.  Once I get one I can't ever say "I don't have any".

I really can't figure out something that I care about that much to get on my body.

Yeah, that pretty much describes where I have always been on the issue as well.  That crest/coat-of-arms that I designed worked because it was something that looked really cool, was personal, and wasn't something "trendy" or "in-the-moment" that I could foresee still identifying with at 80 years old.  Looking back now, I wouldn't have minded a basic military tat ether.  But it wasn't something I was interested in at the time, and the idea of going back and doing it now seems kinda silly.

The one piece of advice I was given before getting a tattoo is MAKE SURE it's something meaningful, 'cuz it's a lifetime commitment (to your point Bill, you can't un-ring that bell).  So good on anyone who doesn't just flippantly tattoo themselves with something.

Mine is all healed now, so I think I might take another picture, now that it's .... settled.

The 1 tattoo I have took me 8 years to design. I started out with something very detailed and complicated and ended up with something a lot more simple and straight forward, but it's something that has meaning to me. I know a lot of people get tattoos just to get one.

And for some hardcore people that simply want their body to be a canvass, that's cool.  But for the rest of the 95% of the population, I think it's important to make sure it's something with a lot of meaning.

I have 2 tattoos. The first one is a tribute to my dad on my shoulder (Quote from Octavarium and dates, written in Octavarium font), which I got with only a few days of planning. Second I got a few years later, a Majesty symbol on my calf, which I wanted for years.

It's funny how the tat that had very little planning and thought to it means more than the tat that I sat and dreamed about for years.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Yep! I always forget I even have mine until someone sees it and mentions it, which only happens if my shirt lifts or my hair is up.

I have two left I want to get. One is the Majesty Symbol. Dream Theater's music has been a part of my life since I was 16....it's interwoven into 'who' I am in some way which I think I share with a ton of people across the globe. So, I definitely want to get that symbol.

The other is I'm going to get a family crest of sorts. I really don't have one but have spoken with my tattoo artist about it and he's going to design it. The only thing I know for sure it'll have is our birthstone colors or even the gemstones themselves....all designed around or in the letter 'M'. I trust this dude to come up with something original and awesome. It's going to be a bit though before I'll have the disposable cash to spend on another tat. Got my cover up tat this year which I planned for.....wasn't planning on the Blues winning the cup though  :lol  So that was an unexpected expense.

I've been tempted, mostly when seeing some beautiful art on other people, but the temptation was never lasting. The minimalist in me always wins. If I were to get a tattoo, it'd be a mechanical gear, or several grouped together.

I'd say 600...the guy that does my work is about 100/hr, and that looks to be at least 6 hours of work. Nice piece.

Yeah. Easily $600. Maybe more. Depending on rate and how detailed.....how many sessions. You gotta pay the price for good tats.

Got another tat yesterday. Had my families birthstones incorporated into a cross...on a weathered and damaged shield. My guy likes to do a touch up session after a couple weeks so I'll go back in on 11/7 for him to touch up anything that doesn't heal well.

Nice work! I'll be back in the chair this spring, myself. I have my kids on one side of my back in Dragon Ball Z style, and I'm going to add my wife and i on the other side. Any significance to the branches framing the shield?

No significance. I just asked him to fill the space with something cool looking. I like the muted filigree he went with.

Only real significant stuff are the birthstones....and obviously the cross/thorns olive leaves with us being a family of faith. I had him crack the shield to signify that faith and family aren’t always ‘easy’ but that both when strong are unbreakable.
