Whats the most disrespected Dream Theater album?
« on: June 25, 2010, 06:47:20 PM »
I'm sure some will pick the first album, but from what I read it would seem SC gets unfair treatment. I personally love the album and think its every bit as good as BC&SL.
So what DT album that you love do you think is treated unfairly?
Yup. Tick is dead on.  She's not your type.  Move on.   Tick is Obi Wan Kenobi

Well, Train of Thought gets a lot of unwarranted criticism, considering its a pretty great album.
I think Systematic Chaos deserves a good deal of its criticism; there are really only a few songs on SC that I think of being near the top of DT's songs.
Also, WDADU and FII get plenty of criticism as well, but there are also those who stick up for it, which balances it out a bit. I don't see very many adamant supporters of Systematic Chaos.

Setra, I think that is the best statement I have read on this forum.  Very well said.

For the whole fan base?  Probably FII because MP doesn't like how it turned out.

Me?  Systematic Chaos no contest.

Well we finally agree on something again PLM!   :P
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Probably WDADU though pretty much all DT albums are received the way they should except Black Clouds which has been received a little too well IMO. Systematic Chaos deserves everything it gets, though.

WDADU or FII, both of which are great albums. For the most part, I feel ToT and SC deserve the disrespect they get, despite a few good tracks on both.

ToT, some people have even said that Dream Theater sold out to Nü-Metal with this album (And that makes me cringe). FII also comes as a close second.

To be fair JP has said that he loves the nu-metal tone and overall sound.

WDADU.  I've always thought it was a spectacular album, though it seems to kind of get shafted around here.  Admittedly, many of their other albums are better, but it still stands on its own rather well IMO.

Systematic chaos

Amazing piece of work, so much fun, great musicianship, everything is in place except for some lyrics. Certainly one of my favorite albums, I love it so much.

They are all treated fairly.  The only one I could even see an argument for is WDADU, which gets judged on Charlie's vocals and the production values on the album, and not on the content of the composition.  However, the final product is what it is, and I can't listen to it very often.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

On the Drums of Thought commentary MP says that some people say the Endless Sacrifice chorus sounds like Nu Metal and he says something along the lines of: Just because it has a groove and a harmonic doesn't mean it's Nu Metal. Then he says that they appreciate the mixing of some Nu Metal albums. He mentions that they used Disturbed and Mudvayne as templates for mixing.
Also, I've heard that the guitar tone in This Dying Soul When JLB first comes in is taken directly from a Mudvayne song.

I saw a review a while ago that called ToT 4/4 mallcore, so ToT gets my vote.

SC gets judged on being a "cheesy fantasy power metal album" (with an insane amount of one out of eight songs actually being that).

Say what you want about Mudvayne but LD 50 is god tier.
