DT moments that made you....
« on: June 19, 2010, 10:12:10 PM »

(astonished, mind-blown, wat, etc.)

sure there are alot for me, but the one i remember the most right now is 12:37 of a nightmare to remember. i thought they were bringing that main riff back, and they switched that into triplet metal zone and psyched me out, and i literally went "oh shit"

The complex rhythm part in Learning To Live. 2nd verse I think? That part is pretty mind blowing.

The first time I heard Scenes from a Memory... I was just.... blown away. I never heard anything like that before then.

The other moments that clearly stand out are the "I'm sick of all you hypocrites" section in ACOS and Intervals in Octavarium.

The first time I ever heard Dream Theater was in 2004, listening to Metropolis. What a day. When the instrumental started and kept going, my head exploded. I was hooked, even had a few girls I dated at the time digging it.

  • 02:23 at The Glass Prison. I was literally mindblown by that part.
  • DON'T CROSS THE CROOKED STEP
  • Another World part in A Change of Seasons
  • Intervals part in Octavarium.
  • WOMP WOMP
  • Sudden transition from War Inside My Head to The Test that Stumped them All in 6DoIT. Never saw it coming.
  • Beginning of the solo in Another Day.
  • Beginning of the first solo in Lie.
  • 12:08 in a Nightmare to Remember. I was like "FUCK YEAH!" the first time that I heard it.

Scarred outro. The first time I saw Innocence Faded from score. The riff blew me away.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

The following Petrucci solos:

ending of About to Crash
finale of Octavarium
In the Presence of Enemies Part 1, two minutes in
The Best of Times 3-min solo

Any critic who says Petrucci just jacks off on guitar and plays with no real feeling should seriously give those solos a listen.
Gadough isn't Hitler. He's much, much worse.

Scenes From a Memory

"Open your eyes, Nicholas"

And when I listened to Images & Words and realized that JLB had the most powerful vocals ever. Another Day's vocals are some of my favourite of all time. OF ALL TIME!

- Goodnight Kiss solo from Score, from 25:33 on basically--by that point I was completely :omg: on the first time through
- The RIDICULOUS time sig changes in the middle of LSOAD.
- The final chorus build up in LSOAD
- Scarred outro
- 3:02 in The Count of Tuscany--build up is great, and when that part finally hits, it's :metal
- The opening to, and first few minutes of, The Glass Prison.

The riff from The Mirror
The drumming during Constant Motion's guitar solo
Endless Sacrifice's chorus
Octavarium and Trial Of Tears after I finally listened to them
Live at Budokan making me realize that an obsession with this band is starting

Absolute genius :)
The band describing John Myung:
JLB: "He's deep. He's deep in thought"
JP: "We have a deep understanding musically"
JR: "John Myung is a very deep kind of person"
MP: "John Myung is an enigma... N he's deep as fuck yo'"

- Bebot solo from ARoP
- Backing vocals in Lines in the Sand
- The transition from Fatal Tragedy to Beyond This Life
- Ragtime piano solo in The Dance of Eternity
- The whole of Glass Prison (my first DT song)
Surely one day they'll work out it would be simpler and far more legal just to suckle on each others' teats in a kind of wonderful 69 of eternal calcium goodness.

1) After the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and not sure how many more (may have faded after 10 or so) listens of SFAM.
2) The Ministry of Lost Souls ending solo.
3) War Inside My Head on Score.
4) In The Name of God on Live at Budokan.
5) Hollow Years on Live at Budokan.
6) Listening to Octavarium after two years and hearing the JP + orchestra part in Sacrificed Sons I for some reason hadn't cared for two years earlier.

Great thread. I have a ton but the ones that jump out at me now are:

In the Name of God - "FROM THE CRADLE THEY ARE CLAIMED!!"  :metal :metal :metal
10:43 - 11:25 of the Great Debate
And ITPOE - "Do you still wait for your God?"

The minute I realised those interludes on Octavarium corresponded to the black keys on the keyboard. That was mindboggling, for me. They didn't even sound like music.

In the shattered fortress when it returns to the intro riff of TGP.  Rediculous.

Most of In the Name of God.
Especially the part with the drum fills before the final chorus.
