Holy lol, this guy is NOT amused

I just received yet another reply from the same guy, so I'm guessing this is Ryan again. Hi Ryan.

for reference:

"Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting support. I was replying to your rambling question in a polite manner that provides you with important information. Please ask your question again if you need further clarification. Short and simple questions are the best.

Thank you,
Ryan
Level I Tech Support Engineer
BlueHost.com

Ryan, I think we got off the the wrong foot. And by the looks of that last e-mail, you seem to be quite the charmer! I'm really a polite guy too, I guess the only difference between the two of us is having a sense of humor. But there's probably not a lot of time for humor in your line of work, so I'll do my best to leave it all out of this message. Deal? I'll also make it short and simple! Here we go!

Ryan, pretty pretty please tell someone to put my site on a server that can handle it please.

stern regards,

Christopher

While part of me is thinking "this is the hand that feeds you, if you're civil to them you're more likely to get a civil response, and more likely to get a positive outcome - nobody's going to want to give preferential treatment to the bloke who's being a pest..."

...the rest of me wants you to bombard that fellow with ridiculously circuitous questions. Just start asking him about his life.

Dear Ryan,

Do you ever look at your life and think "why?"

Also, something about computers.

This, I work in Tech Support and there's honestly not a lot we're allowed to do. I'm a lot more likely to risk getting yelled at for doing something against the rules if the person I'm dealing with is being friendly instead of snarky or raging.

I wasn't trying to be a pain, just thought I'd throw some good natured humor at the guy while expressing a bit of frustration at that point. The problem was that the guy who got the message didn't see the humor in it.

And interestingly enough, I sent an e-mail to another web host expressing interest in hosting with them with a similar kind of tone, treating changing servers as going through a break up kind of, and the guy caught onto it immediately and was throwing jokes back my way in his response. His name was Ryan as well.

Chris I fucking love you.  :lol

Honestly, you should definitely switch servers. They aren't even making an effort to support your site. And if your site keeps going down it's gonna hurt how much traffic you get.

PLEASE send them an amazing letter telling them you no longer need their services.

ugh, it's a bit more complicated than that.

You see, when you pay for hosting with them, you just pay up front for however long you're going to be hosting with them. So first I'm going to have to see how I get refunded for all the months yet to come.

Then I'm going to have to either try to find a way to back up my entire site onto my computer, which may prove challenging as it's a wordpress site. If I can do so correctly, then I can upload it to the new server and all of the links to my comics on the internet will still work.

What I would LIKE to do is just start over and make an entirely new site with the new server. The problem is that my knowledge of HTML is embarrassingly rudimentary.  So my site would end up looking like a personal webpage in 1996 with no navigation and just hyperlinks to comics.

The problem with THAT is that even if I were to somehow stumble my way through making a site, all of my existing traffic through places like stumbleupon would be killed off as the links would be dead (unless I could learn redirecting??). This could build back up in time, so it's not a huge deal, but it's still a bummer.

So all in all, Dreamhost looks to be a good pick. The comic Three Word Phrase uses it and it does just fine, seeing as he gets way more traffic than I do.

Definitely start over. It might just be me but I kinda find it hard to navigate your site the way it is now. I like the random comic option, but you should also have a list of all of your comics on one page so it's easy to access them. As of right now, you have to go through the calendar or just cycle through the comics.

I can try to help you with the site if you want. I haven't done HTML/PHP in like... six years or something though. There are probably lots of other people on this site that are better than me.

So yeah you probably don't want my help. But the offer is still there, nonetheless. You really don't even need the site to be that complex. A banner, maybe some buttons, a footer... that's really it.

You know what I want my site to be like?

this.

or this.

Well, without using .php (on Harry's recommendation). I don't need anything spectacular, and I can probably figure out how to do a lot of stuff with designing it just fine. But the thing I can't really wrap my head around is how I would make comic navigation work. I know I would probably have to make a /comics area to keep all the comics in, and that would somehow serve as a database for the first/next/etc. buttons to work with? I dunno. I mean, I'm willing to put in the effort to make a good, clean site, I just don't know what I'm dealing with here, it's all pretty new to me.

So yeah, I'll take up your offer if you can be, like, useful for once and tell me how that shit would work.

Also, uh, I've been looking into it and does this look like a good deal/what I need to anyone?

https://www.dreamhost.com/hosting-vps.html

It's about $25 a month (as opposed to the $7~ per month I'm paying now) and, well, you can see the technical specs there. It's still a shared server, but with VPS you get to choose how much of the server's resources are dedicated to your site. The $25 a month, the lowest option, gives you 300 MB of ram on the server. Which is good? I dunno. I just want something that can handle the traffic and I don't want to worry about the site going down all the time.

If anyone knows of better deals, feel free.

Though funny, I'm not entirely sure the humor was good-natured by the end of your conversation. :lol
