Math-rock anyone?
« on: June 07, 2010, 04:15:41 PM »
Keep -core out of this thread, I'm talking math-rock: Don Caballero, Tera Melos, Hella, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Polvo, Minus the Bear, Faraquet, etc. Any other fans? I just got The View From This Tower by Faraquet, and it's fucking amazing.

like "Post" music, "Math" music maybe even more so, is guilty of most of the bands sounding the same. However, as I feel with "Post" music, the one's that combine math elements with other styles are generally worth my time.

Adebisi Shank, Battles, Minus the Bear, Kacica and even Foals would be one who includes the style.

I enjoy mathcore and math metal (lolgenres), but have never gotten into math rock.    What do you guys recommend?

Yes, The Human Abstract is another example.

The master list:

Out of those, I'd really recommend:

Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (see link in OP)
Giraffes? Giraffes! - More Skin With Milk Mouth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZqZCS0rCmE
Faraquet - The View From This Tower (see link in OP)

Maybe I do like math-rock then. Those are 2 of my favorite bands.

I only have Battles - Mirrors, which is a great album. I should really check out some more in this genre.

Thanks Sigz!  Will definitely be checking those albums out.  That Hella song in the OP was mind boggling, especially on drums.  Was he only using a single bass pedal?! :o

Yup. Zach Hill, he's one of my favorite drummers. He also plays on Marnie Stern's albums and for El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez Lopez (If you're a Mars Volta fan). The dude's a beast.

edit: I don't remember if you payed attention to it, but that song was on my top 25 songs list.

One of my favourite Math Rock bands is The Decca Sequence.  I'm not sure if they are still going, but they were an underground band from somewhere in the states, I dunno.  Their myspace is still up and I managed to find one video on the 'tube.  Its not the best recording, but the song is fantastic and probably my favourite of theirs.  If the video interests you I recommend you check out the myspace as last time I checked they had some decent recordings up.

This is a great, great band I got into recently. toe is a Japanese post-rock and math-rock band. Just hear them out and how great their drummer is.
