Let's Create the perfect 8GB Ipod! (aka my Ipod :P )
« on: June 07, 2010, 10:37:52 AM »
So recently my 80GB Ipod broke so I am only left with an 8GB Ipod Nano. This is my main source of music listening as it is my alarm every morning, my car music, etcetc

With this in mind, let's say all music on this Ipod was put on into v0 quality (256 kbps for you people who aren't familiar with v0). This would mean my 8GB Ipod holds roughly 1300-1400 songs. I want to build the perfect Ipod, the problem is there are so many good songs and bands! This is the current list of my Ipod and I will keep it up to date as I remove and add certain albums and bands.

Note: I was hoping to make my first thread in something not toooo stupid, so here goes nothing :P

So far I have

If a album or band is in this color it means I have added it to the list since the list's creation
I am no longer here

AC/DC - Back in Black - The Razor's Edge
Aerosmith - O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits (1 of 2) - "..." (2 of 2)

I am willing to remove almost anything on this list as long as it can be replaced with something else. I need to:

- Add a Tool album or 2 or just take Tool's top 20 songs or so
- Add DT disco or choose something like a top 50 songs to add
- Add in Opeth
- Add in Thrice
- Add in Coheed & Cambria (need to purchase a non-live copy of there albums)
- Organize In Flames; maybe take top 50 songs or so for them?
- If you have an idea about a band or artist that you think would make a good addition to this list I will check it out and possibly add it!

Helpful, real helpful. Why don't you recommend what to take out and what to put in? Or just what to take out as I have a large list of what I want to put in. I'm wayyy short on PT which is bugging me, but at the same time they have sooooo much good music Idk what to put in! This is why I created the thread, not just for people to say "Take off all the crap..."

I am at work. I don't do anything and get paid for it  :D. Take out all of these and add in the few you mentioned and any other artist that is talked about a lot here. You should probably check out Riverside, Katatonia, dredg, Anathema, Rush, Coheed and Cambria, Pain of Salvation (not my favorite, but a lot of others here like them), Symphony X, etc.

It's like trying to quit smoking. You have to quit cold turkey.... Just delete it all, it's mostly crap.

And yes, you do need 20th century PT. Although I'm not the biggest fan, try Stupid Dream and Signify.

And ten years from now you'll scoff at 10-25% of the music you call "good" today. Nothing wrong with holding onto old memories.

I pulled out my old hard drive today to take some music off of it and pulled off Tool's disco, Deadwing, and a few other odds and ends that no one would care about :P

I also took a trip to my neighbors store today (owns a book/cd/dvd store) and purchased a few things. When I told him what I was looking for (Things similar to Opeth, Coheed, PT, Tool, etcetc) he pointed me out to the band Katatonia (which I did not initially see in zxlkho's list ironically) and I purchased the album "Viva Emptiness". Boy was I not disappointed! Also bought "Anno Domini High Definition" as well as a few others. Will post and update as I get everything stored away in my computer.

On another note I'm very glad I'm doing this, I am going to have 1 kickass Ipod soon xD

Hmm so I have put down a few more updates, took out some Spoongarden and Smashing Pumpkins. Debating if I should remove All That Remains as I have been told it is too "generic". I love them but should I make room for some more bands like Thrice, Opeth, more DT, and PT? Wow as I'm typing this out I realize how stupid this probably sounds...old habits (songs) die hard  :-\

I want a 16GB Ipod :( This is too hard! I've literally spent all day deciding what I need and don't need and I just don't have enough room!

On another note, are there any particularly bad songs on any of the recently added albums? Surely not EVERY song deserves to be in my Ipod....right...?

Nope, not really. All of those are excellent albums. BTW, check out Katatonia's The Great Cold Distance. Imo, it's better than Viva Emptiness.

Alright I'll go to my neighbor's store tomorrow and pick up a few more albums. I couldn't find any Opeth in the remains of my old hard drive and their cases are all empty so I have to buy them again :( :(

There's gotta be some filler in them....right...? Must. Listen. To. These. Albums. All. Freaking. Night.

Step 1:  Sell 8 GB iPod.  It's not nearly enough

Step 2: Buy 160 GB iPod.

Step 2b: If you lack money to buy said 160 GB iPod, perform tricks to generate said cash flow (you will likely need said cash for CD's, as only major league assholes download their music)

Step 2c: Go to VD clinic, just in case.

Step 3:  Consult with me.  Start by looking at my top 150 albums, and then ask me what I've gotten great in the last 8 months.

Step 4:  Enjoy.

Ok, SCREW this thread, in the last 8 hours I have been introduced to enough music to spin my head round and round. 8GB is about 1/10th of the size needed for everything. How can I possibly fit all of DT, PT, opeth, Riverside, and In Flames alone in 1 Ipod? And that doesn't even begin to scratch soooo much other amazing music! I thought I was making a good first thread earlier today; in reality all I made was an "I'm so ignorant thread". Bleh.

1. I came into the Progressive Metal genre first by Heavy Metal. My first concert ever was In Flames, Children of Bodom, and Megadeth ( :metal Zxlkho  :metal ) After listening to much heavy metal I slowly progressed into Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and Opeth as my "introduction" to progressive metal. Only in the last 12 hours have I learned about many amazing bands that I will be listening to non-stop for countless months ahead. But I still like my heavy metal! This means In Flames, All that Remains, Bullet for my Valentine, Children of Bodom, and stuff like that will always remain on any Ipod I ever own!

2. I am going to get flamed for this so bad, but whats a forum if you can't post an opinion? I'm not a Rush fan. I grew up listening to it on and off and honestly, it never appealed to me. Don't get me wrong, I understand it's importance in terms of influence to today's progressive genre, but does that mean I have to like it? no. I am not at all a fan of the vocals in Rush; never have been and probably never will. I do love just about everything else about them though :P With that in mind, Coheed & Cambria is a very appealing band to me because of it's similarity to Rush, yet with better vocals and guitar.

There I said it, I'm not a Rush fan. Kill me now  :o

dreamtheatervt - Money is no issue for me. But I'm not buying a 160GB Ipod till I know for sure my current one is dead  :tdwn

The boldest part reaches levels of fail DTF has never seen before - and we've seen some impressive levels of fail.

As to your other point - sometimes it takes a while for a band to "click".  It took me a year to get into Opeth, two years to get into Devin Townsend, two years to get into Between the Buried and Me, and 3 years to get into Pain of Salvation.  Opeth, Devin Townsend, and Pain of Salvation are now all top 10 bands for me, and BtBaM is about one more solid album from being a top 30 band.  Never give up on a band, unless that band is Conception...12 years and counting and I still think they suck ass and balls.  There is nothing wrong with keeping around old favorites if you still listen to them.

BTW, what's wrong with your old iPod?  I've owned 5 of them - 3 still work and one had the LCD break because I threw it.  I'm sure you've tried reseting it, but have you tried a complete wipe and install?  Sucks to do, but it can work.

Somehow, somewhere, you need some Agalloch   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g5EO633vEE

Their 2006 album "Ashes Against The Grain" should be a definite on most metal fans mp3 players.  ;D
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.
