Anything Rachmaninoff.

But actually, you might want to start with a more recent composer like Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore.

Going by that I would recommend the Lion King original score. Elephant Graveyard will give you chills.

If you can find it...

Samuel Barber's First Symphony (or "Symphony in One Movement").

Brahms is also another personal favorite. I don't know too much about classical music though, but those two composers are pretty fucking epic.

In all honesty, it would be hard to go horribly wrong if you pick up a CD with a name on it that's vaguely familiar to you despite not being into classical. A lot of companies that publish classical in serieses will also have small descriptions of the pieces on the back of the CD.

My start with classical was literally walking into a music store and grabbing the first two decently priced CDs of pianoconcerti I could find (because I knew I liked pianos, so it seemed a good way to start). They were Beethoven's 5th, and Chopin's 1st, and also the Moonlight Sonata. Couldn't have been better.

Most classical music doesn't have vocals. Just a forewarning.

That said, Beethoven. All of it.

If your local library has a CD section go see what they have in the classical section. Mine has a pretty big selection so any time I'm in the mood for it I can go check out a CD or two. And the best part about this plan is it's free!

Igor Stravinsky's "Firebird" - Lullaby suite. The Basoon melody is the most haunting, scary, yet beautiful melody i've ever heard. I remember studying for my musical history exam in college, i ended up sitting for hours just repeating this.
The video is kind of cool too, because Stravinsky himself is actually conducting it.

Wagner has a lot of really bombastic stuff. I would also recommend Schuberts "unfinished symphony". I remember we listened to that over and over again at parties when i studied music. We where such nerds :lol

The Planets was one of the things that really got me into classical music, as well.  Respighi's Fountains of Rome is a good choice as well.

My suggestion whenever this topic comes up is to find a good classical radio station and listen for a while to find out what types of things you like.  WRR here in Dallas has a fantastic playlist, it streams in high quality online, and you can always find out what something is (or was--they publish their entire playlist for the month, down to the minute).  I've listened to plenty of online classical stations, and WRR is the only one that I particularly like.

Oh yeah, Tannhauser: Overture.  Loud and bombastic Wagner and themes you'll immediately recognize.  Another of the things that got me into the genre.

As mentioned already, the symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler.  Huge works.

Not mentioned but also great are the symphonies of Brahms and Bruckner.

Also:  Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz.  That piece is the definition of "the works"

No.  He's not ready for Wagner.

And I am not a fan Wagner anyway.

Here's a few of my recommendations, in order of classical period.

Tallis Spem in Alium (this is vocal, but it was in the renaissance, before the orchestra was invented.  This was as epic as it got, 8 choirs, written for Queen Elizabeth I's birthday.)

No.  He's not ready for Wagner.

He's already heard quite a bit of Wagner which would make it nicely accessible.  I stand by my Tannhauser recommendation.

Damn fine piece of music.  I've always wanted to find a recording of this with better stereo separation.  I'd like to be able to better discern the violins.

One of my very favorite pieces, and Bernstein's interpretation of all of those were great.  I made a point to obtain the entire set of those DVDs.  Never cared for him as a composer, but as an interpreter of other's music, the guy was fantastic.
