The Radiohead Thread v. Crushed Like a Bug in the Ground
« on: June 03, 2010, 07:37:57 PM »
So this evening I listened to OK Computer with the booklet in hand...

Crazy as it sounds, I have never paid close attention to Radiohead lyrics. Actually listening to them during "Let Down" was an otherworldy experience. This passage, in particular,

You know, you know where you are with
You know where you are with
Floor collapsing, falling, bouncing back
And one day, I am gonna grow wings
A chemical reaction (you know where you are)
Hysterical and useless (you know where you are)
Hysterical and (you know where you are)

Just fucking slayed me. I felt fucking shivers. I did not even contemplate its meaning. Thom Yorke just has a way with words that is angelic.

Only have OK Computer, and I don't care for it at all. But I've been meaning to pick up Kid A; How to Disappear Completely in particular is genius.

Hmm, I have everything Radiohead and ever since I've been listening to them, paying attention to the lyrics was never there for me with this band. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. It's interesting, Thom has that kinda voice, you know what he's saying even if you don't know what he's saying.

I haven't listened to Radiohead much lately, but I am due for another Radiohead phase here pretty soon.  Either way, they are a top 5 all-time band for me, and I also love their lyrics.

"My thoughts are misguided and a little naive
I twitch and I salivate like with myxomatosis
you should put me in a home or you should put me down."

That is good stuff. :tup :tup

Radiohead is my favorite band after Porcupine Tree, even though they didn't click for me at first, when they did... wow.
Thom Yorke is just such a genius, and i'd say the same about many of the others in the band.
Overall i'd say In Rainbows is my favorite, closely followed by Kid A/Amnesiac.
Fav. songs would include: 2+2=5, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, Videotape, Pyramid Song, Everything in it's Right Place, Climbing Up These Walls and Morning Bell. :)

Radiohead are just the best band ever. They may not be my favourite ever but I genuinely believe there's nothing else out there as good as they are. With the exception of those few bad early songs, everything they've done has been pretty much perfect imo.

Swap those 2 round for me, but that might change some time soon as im a relatively new PT fan.
Not listened to Radiohead in a while, but once their next album comes out, ill be listening obsessively again.

That part always gets me too. The lyrics are completely nonsensical but the delivery is incredibly powerful.
"Once he had forests and mountains that were only his - listening to him. Once he would run through the summer days catching memories for ages to come. Now he is dressing this naked floor with his flesh and blood, and time passes by. His trade of pain might just have lead him to deal with consequence for some change as time passes by"

I stand by my opinion that Radiohead is The Beatles of our generation.  They're nowhere near as popular, of course, but they're the kind of band that everyone in a certain age group just likes, not to mention their experimentation over the years while never really losing their old fans.  Fantastic band.  OK Computer is probably my favorite, then followed by In Rainbows tied with The Bends.  Kid A is third.

It took me awhile to appreciate Kid A, but man it was something else whenever I really discovered that album. I've been listening to In Rainbows a lot lately, "Nude" is possibly one of Radiohead's best composed songs ever made, the use of vocal loops and atmosphere is perfection.

I'd definitely follow it.

I tried doing a Radiohead Top 50 once...it didn't really work, I successfully ranked all of their songs but then couldn't bring myself to get rid of more than 10 of them  :lol

Go for it, i've thought about doing it myself, but when Kev did it, it didn't seem like many people were interested/following, at least not compared to his PT top50. :P
So i kinda scratched the idea.
However, i could post a short "these would be top10" later on or something. ;>

Here goes then..

50. Black Star - A mighty strong song considering it's way down at 50. A typical song from the bends.. rocky yet melodic, but very much not a sign of things to come for the band.

49. The Bends - Another entry from the bends, I can vouch that this song is a total killer live!

48. Optimistic - The first song I heard from Kid A: I wondered what all the "what the hell have they done" fuss was about as this didn't seem much different to OK Computer. An initial favourite, which quickly got overtaken by much of this album.

47. I Will - This song had lurking around for a while, eventually making its way onto Hail to the thief. Very short, but sweet with some gorgeous vocal harmonies.

46. (Nice Dream) - A great "interlude" on the bends between two major rockers, but holds up well on its own.

45. Bishop's Robes - A b-side from the Street Spirit single, just one of their many great non album tracks.

I get the comparison, but in all fairness, there will never be another Beatles.  Ever.  But the risks they have taken are definitely similar to those taken by the Beatles back in the day. :tup :tup

Damn straight.  It is a perfectly-written song, and is easily one of Thom Yorke's best vocal efforts to date. :tup :tup

In Rainbows is such a fantastic album, it's one of the most inspiring albums i've heard.
The variety is also awesome, i think it shows how the band has developed during the years.

44. Faust Arp - Another short one, where thom's voice combines wonderfully with the acoustic and strings. I almost always listen to this before 'Reckoner'.

43. Motion Picture Soundtrack - The closer to Kid A is a dramatic drop in pace, and as definately a grower, despite it being one of the more accessible songs on the album (when comparing to previous work).

42. Sit Down Stand Up - Simple repeated lyrics with a crescendo of electronic beats. One of the better songs on Hail To Thief.

41. I Might be Wrong
- This is one of the more 'traditional' moments of Kid A follow up, Amnesiac. Features a repeated loop, only this time using the guitar.

40. Bodysnatchers - One of quite a few songs from In Rainbows that featured regularly live for the year upto it's release. Features some heavily distorted guitar work, and proves the band can still rock.

39. The National Anthem - The song is driven by a simple, repetative bass loop, but boy does it rock. This song is HUGE live.

38. You - A rare great moment from their debut album, Pablo Honey. Simply, a very good rock song.

They've creeped their way to the top of my Last.fm chart.
Kid A is probably my most listened to album.  Followed closely by OK Computer and then In Rainbows.  Some (most... all?) of the lyrics are unbelievably mind-blowing.

I'm sure this link has been posted before, but it's an animation to Creep (acoustic): https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/430141 (from https://www.lowmorale.co.uk/ ).  Something somebody said somewhere in the thread made me think of it.

:tup to You. It's probably one of their best songs but no one talks about it. Keep in mind that I like their alt rock stuff more than their later stuff.

I like Radiohead so much now that I have developed unhealthy levels of fanboyism toward some of their stuff.

Like, usually if someone says they are not so high on a band I like - King's X, for example - I simply shrug my shoulders, make an argument and call it a day, but at least I can understand where that person might be coming from.

But when I see some people talking about OK Computer like, "Eh... It's OK", I am completely befuddled by how anyone could think any less than absolute love for the thing.

As someone who didn't "get" OKC the first time I heard it (granted, it was smack dab in the middle of my prog snob phase :lol), I can understand why some might not like it that much.  If they are as lucky as me, they will eventually. :)

I like Radiohead, and I really like quite a few of their songs, but I can't say there's a single album of theirs that I'm really enthusiastic about the whole way through. OK Computer or Kid A would come closest. I can listen to those albums the whole way through sometimes.
