Focus on a heaviness similar to Pull Me Under.
Can't say I've ever thought of PMU as heavy. Or very interesting for that matter.
I know that re-recording it would allegedly be a crime against humanity or whatever... but Pull Me Under has always struck me as a song which is kind of softened by its production. There are some very chunky riffs in there, but on the album they always sound a bit watery.

Seeing it live definitely makes you realise how heavy it is.

I agree. The sound is too thin.

Muse/Metallica influenced junk.
News straight from 1985: DT have always been influenced by Metallica.

Pull Me Under doesn't sound that heavy on the album but I think it's still one of the best on the album as it is.

Perpetual Change made a terrific point in regards to that subject a little while ago:

Dream Theater's obvious metal influences, like Maiden and QR inspired parts, have always sounded good to me.  It's the more Metallica inspired stuff, as well as the stuff inspired by newer metal genres, that they have the toughest time with IMO.

Both can sound equally good depending on the actual song.

True, but the live version certainly makes up for it.  They ended their set with PMU opening for Maiden and that was the heaviest I've ever heard it.  The chunky riffs were super chunky.

Meaning that you're happy with anything DT members do except for DT and any influence is good as long as it's not from the inside of the band.
Darke7, please, man.

Jesus christ hefdaddy, I know you're a mod, but that doesn't make you invincible, how about you show the man some god damn respect?

It's Darkes7. You forgot the s. Carry on.

If there was an album with
1. The count of Tuscany
2.Ministry of Lost souls
3. In the Presence of Enemies
4.Prophets of war
5. Wither
6 A Rite of passage

It would be the Best DT album to date.

I am saying that they have been writing great music but if they let the cream rise to the top their albums would be better.   They need to write some songs and then only record the GREAT ones.   It would be cool if they had a vault full of rejects that we can listen to when they retire.  But not now.

Yeah, an album showcasing all of modern DT's flaws would surley sound fantastic
