Stargazer during the upcoming shows?
« on: May 30, 2010, 02:06:57 PM »
I have NO clue if someone has brought up this idea yet, since I've been a little out of the loop on recent DT speculation and news. But judging by the recent passing of Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P), what do you think the likelihood of DT playing Stargazer at the upcoming shows would be to honor one of metal's finest vocalists?

I have no idea if this is just a pipe dream or not. But man, that would be one fucking hell of a tribute if they pulled it off.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Maybe not just Stargazer, probably.  During Transatlantic shows they did a lot of Dio as a tribute (Including Holy Diver, actually), anyway I don't think we will be able to do any more than just speculate for the time being, but most likely yes, and I guess it would be logical for it to be Stargazer...

I dunno. If Transatlantic already did it, and they have time restraints, I dunno. But it would be neat.

Time restraints?  They've had time to cover entire albums, as well as improvise and noodle and be spontaneous every show!  The only reason I can think of why they wouldn't is.... well there is no reason.

Yes, at An Evening With...shows. These aren't those. These are opening for Iron Maiden. Maybe on their select few off dates, but on the normal tour dates, no.

Scotty said that no new songs are being rehearsed for the tour, so the chance of this happening is somewhere between 0 and 1 %

I would think there is a possibility of it and the evening with, but due to the limit of time on the IM shows - doubtful (yet still hopeful)

If they cover anything it better be To Tame a Land.

That would be a horrible idea. I'd hate to see an opening band cover the headlining band.

Now, a jam at the end, that would be cool.

Scotty can read Adami's silly posts so that PLM doesn't have to tell him.   :omg:
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Stargazer would be really cool. As for covering Maiden during a Maiden show? It's hard to get much tackier.

I'd rather them do the last 3.5 mins of Seventh Son since Maiden will never play that song again (ala Machine Messiah on the 2004 tour).  :-*

Not if it's a song Maiden hasn't played in ages and won't play again (see my choice above).

Except Yes has played Machine Messiah since then

Yeah, my thoughts: no on TTAL before Maiden (esp. since it won't happen anyway), I wouldn't rule out "Stargazer" during the next "Evening With..." shows though.  Or maybe any of the other BC&SL covers that aren't "Tenement Funster"

Fair enough - but Mike agrees with me and disagrees with you (seeing as they did do the excerpt of Machine Messiah when opening for Yes in 2004).

I doubt it - I think all those covers will be a "been there, done that" thing for them. Plus there's numerous other covers Mike still wants to do, so why limit it to ones they've already recorded? Doesn't make sense.

IIRC, the band asked Yes if they minded them doing "Machine Messiah," so if it didn't bother Yes, it probably shouldn't bother fans too much, although I can sort of see why some might find it a bit tacky.  Oh, and while Yes has since played that song, they hadn't played it in over 20 years at the time DT covered it, and have only played it since because Jon Anderson is no longer in the band.

Now there's a DT-caliber instrumental section! :metal

Edit: crap, I screwed the quotes up. I was agreeing with Scotty on SSoaSS.

How come Maiden never plays it? Or how come I wanna hear it?

If the former, I can't answer the question - ask Steve Harris. If the latter, because it's super cool, fits DT's style well and would grab the attention of Maiden's fans in the same way that the instrumental excerpt of Machine Messiah grabbed Yes' fans' attention.
