Hypothetical DT: a second guitarist
« on: May 27, 2010, 07:57:13 AM »
Continuing on the theme of DT hypotheticals...

I've always been a big fan of bands that sport a twin-guitar attack, a la Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Queensryche, Judas Priest and Redemption, just to name a handful.

Not that it's likely to happen, but if DT ever went to a 2-guitar format, which guitarist would you like to see JP trading licks and riffs with?

Paul Gilbert. After all I've seen of him in MP's tribute videos, I wouldn't want anyone else.

I wouldn't like to see it happen but if it did then it should obviously be Mikael Akerfeldt because then he becomes the 1st choice growling option too

Paul Gilbert, although Paul's style of music (on his solo efforts, at least) tend towards a little more quirky pop-kinda feel.  Not sure how well his big-picture musical style would fit, but as far as guitar playing?  The dude is an absolute monster.

I don't think Micheal Romeo could work.

Paul Gilbert can pretty much be the guitarist of any bands. He can play any music.

Definitely not that guitar n00b Michael Angelo.

Interesting choice for Mikael, he could do the growls on ANTR. :metal

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Because a lot of guitarists would be able to play the rhythm sections for DT, the factor in the decision would have to be stage presence for me (where DT seems to lack).
Having someone energetic and crowd pleasing could bring a new dimension to their live shows.

Thankfully, we'll never have to worry about him being in the band.

My choice? I think those that picked Paul Gilbert are right - not only is he an amazing player, but he's the same age, has a passion for a variety of music that rival's MP's and can play a number of different styles of music.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Not if one of them still writes like old school petrucci.

I'd imagine a second guitarist fulfilling more of a rhythm guitar role, in which case it wouldn't need a virtuosic player like Paul Gilbert. I'd be in favour of them trying this out atleast, if it goes wrong they can forget about it, but if it works there could be the world to gain.

Perhaps Michael Romeo.

On paper it sounds awesome. Then you would get them competing for solos and time in the spotlight...wouldn't last very long.

Yes, but JP doesn't "already" let Jordan play guitar.

have you listened to his solo cd?
I think he would be a perfect fit...
