Light Fuse and Get Away
« on: May 17, 2010, 01:06:28 PM »
The red-headed stepchild of the DT song family, this song never seems to get the respect it deserves, if you ask me.  One of the highlights on the debut record, this is a killer tune that needs more love. :hat

I completely agree. One of my favorites from the first album. I like the key parts very much.

Awesome song. WDADU as a whole never gets enough love, but this song especially.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I love when song meanings are not that obvious, as in this case.  Well, it wasn't that obvious to me at least.  I didn't totally get it until I saw Kevin explain it on the WDADRU dvd.  It's about "f*cking and forgetting," as he said, in order to avoid getting hurt.  Also, the warm keyboard pad in the middle section gives me chills everytime I hear it.

Great, great song. I love the instrumental section, it contains a groove that is not often found in DT songs. The vocal lines are pretty awkward, but the lyrics are pretty good for what they are.

Amen brutha! My favorite off of WDaDU and definitely one that I would love to see live again (tho I was fortunate enough to see it twice in 2004).
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I'll be honest, I've never really cared for this song very much.

Yes.  It definitely suffers from some pacing issues at some points, but is overall a really good song.  Has been one of my favorites on that album for a long time.

I've always found it one of my WDADU favourites. I really love the part when the vocals enter, it feels really dynamic.

I love this song. A close contender for my favourite on WDaDU and in my top 25 Dream Theater songs.

I waiver back and forth between loving this song and thinking its ok/not that great.
I haven't heard it in a while, but last I checked, I wasn't really into it.

I will give credit, though: this is an unusual song to say the least. I appreciate the riffs and structure of this song, considering its so bizarre.
Definitely underappreciated, though.

I never really liked this song, but I'll admit that I haven't listened to the first album nearly as much as the rest.  Maybe it'll grow on me or something.

It's an ok song.  JP's solo is the highlight for me.

I got hooked with the "Would you like to sit and talk to me..." part. And then the song goes downhill into a bad 80s groove.

I listened to WDADU all the way through today, twice.  Music is good, but I think Charlie's voice actually bugs me more the more I hear it.  I was thinking maybe I'd get used to it after a while, but it just doesn't seem to happen.

This

That's a tough one, really.  The dilemma is that it is perhaps the most polarizing album in the band's catalog in terms of people really liking it vs. people really not liking it.  It gets some love, but not as much as any of their later albums.  For me, as someone who likes it a lot, but not nearly as much as any of their later albums, I feel like it get just about the amount of love it should.

LF&GA is my least favourite song on WD&DU, although it's not a bad song. But WD&DU isn't my least favourite album, I really like it! I think people often overlook it because of Charlie's vocals and the bad production. I didn't like it at first listen, either, but it grew on me.

"I can't see where this is going" is one of my favorite sing-alongs in DT songs  :lol I absolutely love this tune, and I although JLB's performance of it in WDADRU is good, I have another bootleg where they play the tune and JLB owns it. Man, James does seem to have bad luck in most official recordings  :P

QFT. One of these days MP should pull together a compilation DVD of all of James' strongest performances of a bunch of their classic songs.
