Is your favorite album a Dream Theater album?
« on: May 07, 2010, 03:48:56 PM »
Specify your favorite album in your post, I'm just curious to see how many people consider one of Dream Theaters works their favorite.

My answer is yes, Scenes from a Memory and Awake are my two favorite albums, which switch back and forth. But, both are Dream Theater!

Scenes From a Memory is my favourite album ever created since I first heard it. Absolute masterpiece of balance, genius, and the central point of everything I love in music. It has everything I ever need. I could elaborate on it, but I doubt someone is interested... :p

The only album that has come close this far is Porcupine Tree "The Incident", which took me totally by surprise. Riverside "Rapid Eye Movement" and Pain of Salvation "The Perfect Element I" are not far behind.

I just realized, I don't know what my favorite album is anymore. I picked the third option just in case.

Mine would probably be Megadeth's "Rust in Peace", but Scenes comes pretty damn close.

Yup, Awake. It's the album that made me change my thoughts from "DT is cool" to "DT is now my favorite band ever" and also got me into Prog Metal. Mainly because it has songs that caught me the very first time I heard them (Caught In A Web, Innocence Faded, Lie, Space-Dye Vest -Yes I'm serious-) and more subtle songs I started to like progressively as time went by (Scarred, Erotomania, LSOaD, 6:00). I also like it because it's atmospheric, with a dark ambient and very deep song meanings. Even with the Lie Lyrics, the album is a masterpiece.

I'm surprised about the results this far, I remember when we had a "10 favourite albums thread" in GMD a while ago, there were few DT mentions in general, and usually at places 6-10...

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence is in my top 5. The other four are.... Shit, I haven't thought about this in awhile. I guess the list would look like....

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
Spock's Beard - Snow
Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence

No, I can say that my 4 favorite albums have been solidified on top for awhile now and although Transatlantic makes the top 4 (Bridge Across Forever), Dream Theater only makes the top 10 (Scenes From a Memory).

No it isn't, at least not right now.

My top albums are:

Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Ulver - Perdition City
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Opeth - Deliverance
Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here

DT-album closest to the top would be Awake or 6DOIT.

No way.

I'd say my favourite album is Neu! - Neu! 75

Highest DT album would be Awake which would make my top 50.

No. I don't think any of their albums have ever held that position, honestly. My current favorite is Rage for Order. Has been for a year or two.

I wanna say "Scenes" is tied at 2 with The Great Misdirect.

Number 1 being City Of Evil.

I'm not sure but, probably so. Awake ofcourse. It depends on my mood I suppose. Others would be:

Iron Maiden- Piece of Mind
Queensryche- The Warning
Bruce Dickinson- Chemical Wedding
Genesis- The Lamb
Yes- The Yes Album
Spock's Beard- V
Coheed and Cambria- In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth
All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again

No, but Images and Words, Awake, and SFAM would be pretty high on my list if I actually made one (which I won't).

My favorite album is probably Moving Pictures by Rush.

This. I know it's a cliche to cherish such a classic album, but it was a very pivotal moment in the way I approached certain music. You could very much say I listened to Dream Theater as a direct result of DSotM.

This.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Tough decision, depends on the day. It'd be either:

Dream Theater - SFAM
Dream Theater - SDOIT
Rush - Moving Pictures

For the first time in my life (my adult life, anyway), the answer is no!
The top spot has been filled by Blomljud by Moon Safari. If you haven't heard these guys and you happen to see a thread in general music in the next couple of weeks with their name in it, please read it. I'm going to be reviewing it because I think all of you need to be educated on this band if you don't know them yet. Now that I think of it, wasn't there already a thread somewhere where people review new albums they've listened to?

Mine is currently not a DT album and probably won't be ever again as I've 'lost the spark' for them but it was SFAM for a long, long time. Octavarium's still probably my favourite song ever if that counts.  :P

Rush - Power Windows

That will probably not change

Second to that is Awake though
