When I knew how James got the inspiration to write this song, I went from '':'('' to '':|''
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Really? I think it shows that he has a very legitimately creative side.

6. Sad, but seriously, how sad can really fast arpegios be?
I don't know. I think they worked quite well in this song.

I'd give it a 7.

I thought it was something personal, like Vacant. Don't get me wrong, the song is sad, but not as much as I thought it was for James.

I used to think this same thing.

But now I agree, it does show that he has an incredible creative side--to be able to put yourself in that kind of situation and write such heartfelt lyrics is incredibly useful, especially within Dream Theater.  The band obviously is not known for its lyrical ability (in comparison to bands like Porcupine Tree), and James has had mixed reviews about his songs in the past (Vacant vs. Prophets of War for example).

To put yourself in a fabricated environment of someone else's experience is a real skill, and is very, very important for songwriters...obviously, musicians cannot be expected to have every sort of terrible thing ever happen to them in order to write touching lyrics, so they need to develop a good sense of empathy and understanding to help relate to imaginary situations like these.

I gave it a 7.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. The reason they don't play it live anymore is that MP wanted a song that would only be performed once.

And here's hoping they bring it back someday.

Even though this song has made me cry, I still gave it an 8 because I have heard sadder songs.

This. But I'd bump it to 8.5, because it has made me cry several times, consecutively, at 3AM. It's one of my go-to-when-bummed-songs.

Gave 8.

There are lots of sadder songs but this song is their saddest piece, IMO. And it's lyrically masterpiece.

I gave it a 7, I think it's pretty gloomy and depressing, but it's not the saddest song I've ever heard by any means. It is an excellent song though, it's the first song that I really got into on the first disc of SDOIT. I remember the week I bought the album, I must've listened to it like 15 times in just a few days.  :)

Gave it a 7 on the sadometer.

Love this song and the mood it creates!

Another song that i find extremely sad and depressing is When The Walls Go Down by Evergrey it's a tough song to listen to but i love it.

9. It's among the most emotionally influencing songs that I've heard in my life, but the piano "bridges" take away some of it.

9. The saddest song DT has done to date, IMO. With that being said, there are plenty of songs out there that are more sad then this.

6. The subject matter is obviously sad but apart from the intro, the music itself doesn't sound sad (and it's not like those arpeggios help anything). Call me emotionless if you want but Disappear doesn't make me sad at all. I've heard many sadder songs, even from DT - Wait for Sleep, Space-Dye Vest, Through Her Eyes, Vacant, Far from Heaven and Beneath the Surface come to mind.

I voted 9. Not because I think it's a super sad song that drives me to tears or anything, but I think it is DT's second most emotional/saddest song, behind Vacant.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

It's very sad in tone, but it doesn't actually make me feel emotional, so.  Somewhere in the middle of the scale.  I went with 6.
