I don't get why people say well so and so said this or that, so I'll enjoy their music less.

What Dave rambles about in interviews and such has no input on whether I enjoy his music any more or any less..this goes for any musician.

So yeah, I've decided I'm going to listen through Megadeth's discography over the next few weeks/months, and I think it'd be cool if we made a fun discussion group out of it like the Opeth thread has been doing. So yeah, post rankings, talk about it, and make general merriment.

KIMB ranking:
1. Looking Down the Cross
2. Killing is My Business...And Business is Good!
3. The Skull Beneath the Skin
4. Mechanix
5. Last Rites/Loved to Death
6. Rattlehead
7. Chosen Ones
8. These Boots (the original. The censored version should be killed with fire)

Damn, I forgot how much I love this album. The original's production is raw as fuck, but I always wrote it off as adding to the intensity. Of course, I listened to the remaster a few days later, and it's stunning how much better the album is with cleaner production. The bass parts especially are really cool, and they cut through quite well on the remaster. Looking Down the Cross remains one of my favorite Megadeth songs. It covers so much ground, and it's even more impressive that Mustaine was able to write a song like that so early in his career. Mechanix still absolutely shits all over the Metallica version (the "FUCK YEAH" in the end chorus is so full of win). Overall, I wish this album got more recognition among fans. It seems like Peace Sells and Rust in Peace get all the love.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

KIMB

Didn't really care for it, but I'll join in the discussion anyway, since I'm definitely a fan of the later stuff and want to contribute.

Of course, I listened to the remaster a few days later, and it's stunning how much better the album is with cleaner production.

Maybe I should check out the remaster.  Might change my opinion of the album as a whole.

...it's even more impressive that Mustaine was able to write a song like that so early in his career.

???  Why do you feel that way?  A lot of the stuff he helped write for/with Metallica before leaving was AMAZING.

would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Because it's miles beyond anything he ever wrote up to that point. Even the stuff he wrote with Metallica was still relatively pedestrian in comparison. It never changed moods or did much to develop an interesting atmosphere.

And yeah, definitely get on that remaster. It's phenomenal aside from the edited These Boots.

I haven't listened to KIMB in a while, but LDtC is awesome from beginning to end, Top 5 Megadeth song for sure. :metal

I'll post the ranking after a relisten, though that'll be next weekend at the earliest, because I don't have it on my iPod at the moment and I'm away from both my computer and my CD rack.

I think Metallica announced not long ago that they are beginning to work on a new album. So I immediately thought that Dave's probably gonna announce something similar very soon. As long as there is Metallica, Dave's not going to hang it up...
I was right (from his facebook, yesterday):

Quote
Droogies,
I wanted to check in with you as I get ready to start tracking my 14 Megadeth record.

/...blah, blah... Going on about surgery and other stuff... Very long post.

One last thing, I don't generally watch video of myself, unless we are mixing or editing something, and over the last few months I had to; for one reason or another. I am really embarrassed by how much I swear or swore on stage and in interviews. I'm not a prude, but I am sorry for my language and some of the offensive words I chose to say. We all have said stuff we regret, and while I don't "regret it" I do feel that you deserve better from me.

Here's to a great fu...., erm, a great flipping new record and tour!

If Mustaine was any less crazy, Megadeth wouldn't be so awesome. Loved his autobiography by the way, fascinating read.
And yeah, can't wait for the new album as well.

I don't look at 13 as a viable statement, honestly. It had so many reworked B-sides and stuff that it absolutely screamed that it was simply a "get me the fuck off of this label" album rather than the next Megadeth album. I'm sure the next one will be the best they've done in years. They've gotten rid of all the crappy stuff that's been lying around, and the Daves will get back to doing what they do best. Chris will shred his balls off, and Shawn has been getting better with every album.

Of course, if I'm wrong and 13 was actually supposed to be a good album, I'm a little scared that Dave's tapped out. Some of those songs REALLY suck.  :lol We the People and 13 are really the only "new" songs that I enjoyed. New World Order is still the best song the band's ever made, but I loved it as a B-side. Hammered into the middle of a lackluster album kind of killed it. I still can't believe they added to Millennium of the Blind, and doing Black Swan again after literally everyone's already heard it was the epitome of laziness to me. At least when they put Bodies on Endgame nobody had heard anything other than a 30 second snippet.

I didn't even know Bodies had been available before.

Anyway, I probably wouldn't have a problem with all the demos 'cause I haven't listened to a lot of them, if only they were done well. I mean, 13 is the only song that I listen to anymore, and sometimes PE#1 and NWO, even though I had no idea at first that so many were reworked demos, but even if they were original songs, they aren't very good original songs.

New World Order is fucking amazing. Bodies was originally predicted to be on the "special edition" that Roadrunner always used to release of their new albums as "The Bodies Left Behind." When that never surfaced, we assumed it was gone forever. Black Swan was on some other version of the album, but I can't remember which. Hell, maybe it was a pre-order bonus. But either way, it was a finished song that people had grown to appreciate on its own.

I guess my whole thought on the matter is, it's cool to rework older material for your new album, but when it's basically the same song with no changes, and worse yet it's something we've already heard, it turns into laziness.

Well, as I said I don't know many of the demos but Black Swan was actually reworked (if for the better or not, that can be discussed), so at least there, something actually happened. The original was a bonus track on UA, I think.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bZQlN-u3f4

Anyway, yes, NWO is great, but 13 remains my favourite from the album.
