The best Jimi Hendrix album?
« on: May 06, 2010, 08:50:51 AM »
Now that summer's upon us, I tend to pull out all my 60's "hippie" music, and Hendrix is one of my faves from that era along with The Grateful Dead and Cream.

It's unfortunate to think that he only put out 4 albums during his lifetime, but at least they were 4 excellent albums.

What would be your pick to be his best?   I intentionally left off the endless posthumously-released compilations and "lost tape" collections that clutter the market these days.

That's a toughie.  I'll have to think about it.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Electric Ladyland.  It's his most ambitious and is just as consistent as the others in my opinion.

Band of Gypsies, it's just all kinds of awesomeness. I prefer it to his hit-singles. Hendrix in jammin' mode = amazing.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Electric Ladyland but that's a real tough too coz Experienced and Axis are both pretty incredible as well.
Btw the song South Saturn Delta was gonna make it on Ladyland.

Axis: Bold As Love, baby.

This. Band of Gypsies suffers from the lack of Experience members, primarily Mitch Mitchell.

I haven't heard them all, so I can't make an informed vote.  I HAVE heard all of Axis and it is badass.  Bold as Love is an excellent song.  All tender and moving, then at the end, BAM!  Jimi rips.  Killer solo.

Also, I always chuckle a little at the drum fills just before the outro, where you can tell all three drum fills are kinda from different pieces of tape or something.  They all sound pasted together.  But, hey, that's how they did it back then.  Still killer.

Indeed. Mitch > Buddy.

I remember an OLD issue of Circus magazine where they asked a LOT of guitar players what their all time favorite solo was.  Machine Gun showed up a TON.

My fave Machine Gun solo would be the one at The Fillmore East, it's not the versions on the Band Of Gypsys: Live At The Fillmore East (2CD). Weird, but it's the one that was also filmed in greyscale.
My second fave Machine Gun performance is the 1st show at Berkeley in 1970. Mitch really gave a new flavour to the song with his more jazzy drumming style.

I've wanted to get into Hendrix for a long time, but I never know where to start, since everyone seems to say that either everything he did was amazing or everything he did was oh so overrated.

Though that's probably a good sign to start pretty much anywhere.

Ok, so my first song of The Experience I heard was Voodoo Child (Slight Return). Then a while after I came across 'Are You Experienced?', loved it a lot. It's a good start if you like a lot of single quality songs. Axis: Bold As Love begins the varied work of Hendrix and the band, and then Electric Ladyland being more of a Hendrix solo effort because he worked with a lot of session musicians too. But that album has a bit of everything, even his possibly most psychedelic song "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)".

It's totally up to you man, you will discover all his official studio stuff in a short time. Just 3 albums, so enjoy it all I guess :tup.

Most of the way through my first listen of Are You Experienced?

It wasn't one of those first listens where I'm swooning and squealing, but I liked it.

Yep, it's an album that needs a sinker. A couple more listens and you'll find it was totally worth it.

Band Of Gypsys.

Ohhhhhhhhh shit! I love this album :hat and it has maybe the best performances of his funky style. I dig it every time, 'til I get to the core of the earth.

Totally loving Are You Experienced? now.

I think what got in my way with Hendrix for so long was the really murky production. And possibly also his singing style. He's all like, "who cares if it doesn't much sound like I give a shit and I'm mumbling by the end of the line, I'm Jimi Hendrix, bitch."
