-Liquid trio experiment
-Muse 2nd law except mk ultra
-Metallica post S&M
-Maximum the hormone latest album, nothing compares tu buki kaesu
-From singles the latest babymetal will probably be worse than the 2 firsts

My biggest disappointment in music was watching the premiere of Megadeth's Crush'Em music video.

That EDM intro, the (for lack of a better term) dumbness of the song, just left me destroyed. I was a BIG Megadeth fan at the time, had seen them twice, loved everything up to Cryptic Writings, so i was absolutely eager to listen to some new Megadeth. What a bummer that was.  :lol  I had honest to god nightmares about that song. :rollin

Ther are others, like Blind Guardian's A Twist In The Myth (love everything they did up to Nightfall, A Night at The Opera was weird but i kind of liked it), but i can't connect with the newer stuff.

Demons & Wizards second album was a huge disappointment for me, as well. So was Iced Earth's Crucible of Man.

There are others, but these are what i remember right now.

Preobably dredg's Chuckles album. The Pariah is my favorite album of their by far and I hoped they would've continued in that direction and made another long conceptual album with lots of twists and turns. But then Chuckles happened. I just have no idea what they were thinking and how they felt confident to release it.

I honestly thought it was a joke and that they'd release the "real" album shortly after, but 8 years later...

Van Halen 3
Queensryche - HITNF

I'll agree with those two for sure.  Others from the 90s ....

Bon Jovi / These Days
Def Leppard / Adrenalize
Skid Row / Subhuman
U2 / Achtung Baby
Tesla / Bust A Nut
Harem Scarem / Voice of Reason
Maiden / No Prayer for the Dying

Chad, I would go with Zooropa  not Achtung Baby for U2.

For me personally.

Damn... total brain fart.  That's exactly what I meant.  There are a couple of 'lows' on Achtung Baby, but nothing that made me disappointed in it.  I completely meant Zooropa.  There is nothing redeeming about that album (imo).

I liked Zooropa, & Stay.  That's it.  The rest is hot garbage.

I did like the soundtrack song "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" that was from that sessions but not on the album.  I think it was for a Batman movie.

I like Lemon a lot now, but the live version on the Sydney DVD is my go-to version; that kicks the snot out of the studio version.  Dirty Day is a good tune as well.

Albums I was anticipating that did not hit the mark at all for me:

Rush - Snakes & Arrows
Dream Theater - BC&SL
Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse
Evanescence - The Open Door
Flying Colors - Second Nature
In Flames - A Sense of Purpose
Scar Symmetry - Dark Matter Dimensions
Opeth - Heritage

I have no disappointments. Everything is as it should be imo.

So the main thrust of my post is...how is it that the forum newbies are willing to dig this deep into the forum archives to find threads that were long long dead and revive them? How the hell do you have the staying power to find stuff like this, more so than established members?

Damn, so many DTFers that went away.

Turbo, 1984, and The Ultimate Sin.

Yeah, I thought about that too. Diver Down had several good songs on it, though. 1984 had Girl Gone Bad and a whole bunch of awfulness. But moreover, the point is realtime, and I wasn't a huge VH fan at that point. I liked Van Halen in general and I hated 1984.

AFI - Decemberunderground (just an absolute disappointment after the masterpiece that was Sing the Sorrow)

whoa whoa whoa, now that album was a musical shift, but holy cow was/is such an amazing album.  Maybe you've come around since then to it?  I'm a huge AFI fan boy though.

1984's tracklist is a tale of two extremes.  The hits are great; everything else is dud-worthy, imo

Top Jimmy - meh
Drop Dead Legs - not bad
I'll Wait - terrible ballad; VH's worst ever
Girl Gone Bad - don't even remember it
House of Pain - ditto
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

While I didn't live the era (born in 84) looking back I would have thought Diver Down to be the bigger disappointment than 1984.

This implies that Jump is something other than a steaming pile of shit.

And check out GGB. It might well be a holdover from Diver Down, but it's a good song and at least is sounds like VH.

Coming off of FW it was certainly a big step down, but it was listenable. Also, the singles were better. If you're getting constant exposure to them on the radio and MTV I think you're better off with Pretty Woman (w/Intruder) and Where have all the Good Times Gone than Jump and I'll Fucking Wait.

Girl Gone Bad is kind of proggy actually. Best song on an album that I'm not too fond of and super underrated.

Something else you have to consider it that in that era there was a big pushback against keyboards in what we then considered heavy metal. Ozzy could get away with it because it was all so gothic, but other bands really caught a lot of flack for it (and at the time, rightly so). DD and 1984 were both disappointments, but the latter had that added knock against it.

The problem was that they really weren't back then. Bands have certainly learned how to use them to that effect, but back then they were generally used to move in a more poppy, commercially successful direction. VH, and to a lesser extent Priest were prime examples of that. Maiden got away with incorporating synths because, at the end of the day they still sounded like Maiden.

Disappointment might be a strong word, given that I'm usually content with a band that I love at some point dropping something that's sub-pair. They can't all be winners. That being said, there were quite a few such occurrences, especially in recent years. I'll try to go chronologically, starting from 2011:

Symphony X - Iconoclast
MGMT - MGMT
Gamma Ray - Empire of the undead
Judas Priest - Redeemer of souls
Pink Floyd - The Endless river
Coldplay - A Head full of dreams
They Might Be Giants - Phone power
Weezer - Pacific daydream
The Decemberists - I'll be your girl
Muse - Simulation theory

Considering the trash that AFI has put out since, yeah I've come around to it a bit more. But at the time, coming off StS, I just didn't know how to process it. To me, it's still not an AFI album I reach for very often.

I remember MTV premiered Jump on NYE 83-84. I stayed at my grandmother's house because she had cable (she lived in the city, we lived in the boonies). I remember seeing it for the first time thinking WTF'nF was that??

Bart, 1984 has a bunch of great tunes. Hot For Teacher, House Of Pain, Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs, and Girl Gone Bad.
DD was quite weak. After The Full Bug, and maybe Little Guitars, there's not much there.

The Ultimate Sin.

100% agreement.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
